When Someone says WHY??

tell Them WHY NOT......

After a certain age, many people lose hope and they think that they can't pursue schooling/further education. But Kimani Maruge proved that age is just a number and it cannot close his door for education. It is never too late to learn something new.

Kimani Maruge went to School for the first time at the age of 84. He enrolled in the first grade in January 12,2004 after the Kenyan government declared free public education for all Kenyans. But initially he met resistance from the staff of the school. They told him that he has no pencil and all students need a pencil and notebook.

When he returned with a pencil and notebook, he was told that he must have a school uniform – which included shorts, knee socks and shoes. Magure sold one of his goats to buy pants that he cut into shorts. He purchased a pair of knee socks and shoes. He returned to the school – an 84-year-old man dressed as a child. Locals taunted him, but he continued in his quest to get an education.

In 2005, Maruge turned himself as a model student and was elected head boy of his school. The classmates ten times his junior would be hard-pressed to match the enthusiasm of Maruge. But he had to leave his education after his property got stolen during the 2007-2008 post-election violence. But he again joined a school in 2008 while living in Refugee camp and attended every class and became a role model for children. After starting lessons, he lived for a further five years before dying of stomach cancer in 2009.

Today, Maruge is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest person to start primary school. He was an extraordinary person whose passion for education throughout his life shines as a beacon worldwide on the importance of lifelong learning. He is now role model for everyone who never had opportunity to pursue education
