English mean ?

Latin rhythmus, from Greek rhuthmos - Indo-European roots

Is Y a Vowel? Kinda.

Vowels are, strictly speaking, sounds, not letters of the alphabet.
The letters of the alphabet used to represent vowel sounds are a, e, i, o, u, w, and y.

The sound of "w" in "water" and of "y" in "yes" are called semi-vowels or glides; however, these glide sounds are not the only sounds which "w" and "y" represent. They can represent full vowels as well, as in "crwth" and "cyst" and "sky".

Furthermore, "w" is associated with "u" and "y" is associated with "i", so that "u" and "i" also represent the glide sounds in "water" and "yes", as in "quite" and "onion". Had history gone a little differently, we might now be spelling these last two as "qwite" and "onyon"!

So the little clause "and sometimes 'y'" is really a misleading little clause. It presupposes that the glide sound in "yes" is to be considered a consonant. Otherwise, the "y" would be considered a vowel the same as "a, e, i, o, u", i.e., always a vowel. And if "y" is not a vowel when a glide, then neither is "i", and there should be another clause saying that "i" is "only sometimes a vowel", it not being so when it represents a glide (as in "onion").

In summary, "i", "u", "y", and "w" are all used to represent both glides (semi-vowels) and full vowels.

Vowels are A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y.

Y is a vowel in the words rhythm, system, sky, spy, cry, my, why, and shy.

One effective way to learn English is to create your own imaginary friends.

It sounds like a lonely kid playing in an empty house but, believe me, it really works. You can't have your English teacher or foreign friends with you 24 hours but you are with yourself 24/7.

Assume the situation and talk to yourself when you have time.

For example, you can assume that you will go for an interview tomorrow and keep answering possible questions that you create.

You can assume that you are answering tourists who ask you about the direction from your office to the popular shopping mall.

Again, keep practicing and you will find yourself very capable in real situations. Just one caution. You better not talk out loud in public places!!

The word O.K. was firstly used in 1838 by Boston newspaper.

They tried to come up with the way to make the journal more interesting by using acronyms such as I.D.N (I don't know).

The acronym was getting distorted from time to time and one of them is O.W. which stands for All right because the pronunciation is similar to Oll Wright as well as O.K. which stands for All Correct because the pronunciation is similar to Oll Korrect.

However, the O.K. would have been forgotten over time had it not been used in the campaign for U.S. President of Martin Van Buren.

The O.K. Club was established to support Van Buren in the election. This O.K. stands for Old Kinderhook which is his hometown. Even though he lost the election it brought a big popularity to the word O.K.

The popularity of O.K. is widesperad and continue until present.

Once upon a time there was a boy with a very difficult character. His father gives him a bag full of nails and tells him to drive one nail in the garden fence every time he loses his patience and/or has an argument with someone.

The first day the boy drives 37 nails in the garden fence . In the following weeks, the boy learns to control himself and the number of nails driven in the fence gets lower every day:

The boy discovers that it is easier to learn to control himself than to hammer nails in the fence.

At last, the day comes when the boy does not drive any nail in the garden fence. Then he goes to his father and tell s him that today he did not need to hammer any nail.

His father then tells the boy to take out one nail from the fence for every day
he succeeds in controlling his temper and not loosing his patience. Many days pass and finally the boy can tell his father that he took out all nails from the fence.

The father brings his son in front of the fence and tells him: « My son, you behaved well, but look how many holes you left in the fence »

It will never be the same. When you have an argument with someone and tell him bad words, you leave him with wounds like these ones.........
