Our Roots, Our Responsibility – A Learning Showcase by Grade 3

On 10th and 11th March 2026, Grade 3 students presented “Our Roots, Our Responsibility,” an engaging learning showcase centered on the theme of sustainability and inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The presentation highlighted how traditional wisdom and eco-friendly practices can guide us towards a more sustainable future.
Through the concept of “Two Faces of Surat,” students explored the city’s journey from earlier nature-connected lifestyles to the challenges of modern living. They demonstrated how traditional practices once helped communities live in harmony with nature. These included Kolam designs made with rice flour to feed birds, cottage industries such as pottery and weaving, clay utensils, handwoven textiles, natural cleaning products, and the use of neem, babool, and shikakai for daily hygiene.
A model of a sustainable village illustrated how people once practiced responsible living through mud houses, rainwater harvesting, natural water purification, composting of organic waste, and the use of gobar for biogas plants and fuel cakes. Students also showcased microgreens cultivation, agriculture, and traditional livelihoods, emphasizing how these practices supported both people and the environment.
Learning across subjects was meaningfully integrated. In Mathematics, students explored symmetry through Kolam patterns, patterns in nature, and traditional methods of calculation used in villages. Activities such as vegetable market simulations and butterfly symmetry painting made mathematical concepts engaging and relatable.
The English segment introduced language learning through interactive activities like Grammar Hopscotch, where students practiced concepts such as prepositions within the setting of a model village.
In Hindi, students presented a lively chaupal-style theatre performance, incorporating language concepts such as sangya and sarvanam, while conveying messages about values, traditions, and responsible living.
The EVS segment highlighted experiential learning through discussions on the lake ecosystem, food chains, and the importance of every living organism in maintaining ecological balance. Students connected these ideas with global goals such as SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The presentation concluded with students sharing how simple everyday actions—saving electricity, reducing plastic use, planting trees, and conserving water—can help build a sustainable future.
Through “Our Roots, Our Responsibility,” students beautifully demonstrated that the wisdom of our traditions can guide us toward responsible choices today and a greener tomorrow.
