A few anecdotes about Sardar.

Sardar Patel was out of station when the Home Secretary H. V. R. Iengar took a decision on an urgent issue. On his return to New Delhi, Sardar Patel explained the flaws in Iengar’s decision and that it might invite criticism. Subsequently, when it came up before the cabinet, he told them that it was his decision. Iengar was deeply touched. He followed the principle that authority can be delegated but not responsibility.

When the 21 year old Prince of a small state in Orissa said "My people want…” Sardar Patel interrupted him ‘They are not your people, Your Highness. They are my people. Leave them to me.” The Prince sat down. A few princes in Orissa wanted to be kept as a separate entity and not merged in Orissa. They desired to take legal opinion. Sardar Patel retorted "Your Highness may consult the lawyers but I make the law.”

"Meetings with Vallabhbhai were a joy from which I returned with renewed confidence in the future of the country. I have often thought that if fate had decreed that he, instead of Jawaharlal, would be younger of the two, India would have followed a very different path and would be in better economic shape than it is today”
