Paper remembers every touch of the eraser. Erase the same patch enough times and it stops holding colour the way it once did. The shine you are chasing never arrives that way.
I draw Perumal in gold, silver and bronze using this exact patience, one layer at a time, no checking in between. This is the first thing I teach anyone starting hyper realistic drawing in colour pencil. Trust the layer. Judge the drawing from across the room, not with your nose against the page.
