From NIT Srinagar to IIT Delhi.
And now, to TUM, Germany. 🇮🇳🇩🇪

Meet Soban Lone, a RISE alumnus who is currently pursuing his PhD in Transportation Systems Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Soban completed his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from NIT Srinagar, followed by an MS (Research) in Applied Mechanics from IIT Delhi.

Today, his research at TUM focuses on using Artificial Intelligence for traffic forecasting. He is working on making advanced AI models more interpretable and generalisable, with applications in Intelligent Transportation Systems.

At RISE, we meet students when they are still in school.

At that stage, the dream might simply be to crack an entrance examination and get into a good college.

Years later, it is special to see where those journeys lead.

A student once asked me to pray for her JEE mocks.

I did.

Her marks went down. 😂

A few days earlier, Soliha had come to me and said:

“Sir, pray for me.”

“Of course.”

A few days later, she met me again.

“Sir, did you pray for me?”

“Yes.”

She smiled and said, “Sir, mere marks kam ho gaye.” 😂

That was Soliha Mubarak.

Humble, relaxed and almost always smiling. I honestly don’t remember seeing her stressed, even through the ups and downs of JEE preparation.

Soliha is from Shopian and wanted to study engineering. IIT wasn’t something she had grown up knowing much about. In Kashmir, medicine has traditionally been the more familiar path.

When she decided to prepare for IIT, her family shifted from Shopian to Srinagar to support her preparation.

Then came JEE Advanced.

She qualified.

Media reports later described her as the first girl from Shopian to qualify JEE Advanced.

And then came the allotment:

IIT Kharagpur.

My alma mater. ❤️

A girl from Shopian who once didn’t know much about IITs is now studying at one.

Not just any IIT.

Mine.

Soliha, I guess the prayers worked after all. 🙂
