When you feel safe with someone truly, something softens inside you. You talk more openly. You share the messy parts. You stop filtering every word. You let yourself be seen.
But the moment something feels off… a sharp tone, a delayed reply, a look that feels cold, or even an old memory of being hurt… your system tightens. You become careful. You share less. You pull back. Sometimes you go quiet. Sometimes you go distant.
This isn’t you being “too sensitive” or “emotionally unavailable.”
It’s your nervous system doing its job.

Hypervigilance is a state where your nervous system stays constantly on high alert, even when there is no real danger.
It often develops after trauma, chronic stress, or growing up in an unpredictable environment. Your brain keeps scanning for threats, reading tones, facial expressions, and body language because it once needed to do this to stay safe.
Even in calm situations, your body struggles to relax.

Hoovering is when a toxic or narcissistic person tries to suck you back into the relationship after you leave or go no contact. They suddenly message you with love bombing, fake apologies, or “I’ve changed” right when you start healing, hoping to pull you back into the toxic cycle.
The term was coined in 1995 by Jeff Miller in an online support group run by author Randi Kreger. It comes from the Hoover vacuum cleaner because they try to “suck” you back in.
Don’t fall for it.
