The University of Kashmir proudly celebrates a moment of national recognition as its former faculty, Prof. Shafi Shauq, has been named among the recipients of the Padma Shri Award 2026, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour. An eminent Kashmiri scholar, poet, linguist, and translator, Prof. Shauq has been honoured for his exceptional and lifelong contribution to education and literature, particularly for his role in preserving, enriching, and promoting the Kashmiri language and its rich literary heritage.

Congratulating Prof. Shauq on the prestigious honour, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan said that the recognition is a matter of immense pride for the University and the entire region, noting that his scholarship and dedication have played a vital role in strengthening Kashmiri language, culture, and literary traditions at both national and international levels.

Prof. Shauq served the University of Kashmir with distinction for over 33 years, retiring as Dean, Faculty of Arts, in 2010. He also headed the Department of Kashmiri from 1997 to 2009 and is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative voices in Kashmiri literature, with more than 45 books to his credit. His academic and literary work continues to inspire scholars, students, and readers across generations.
