"The development of physics, like the development of any science, is a continuous one. Each new idea is dependent upon the ideas of the past. The whole structure of science gradually grows, but only as it is built upon a firm foundation of past research. Each generation of scientists stands upon the shoulders of those who have gone before."

On this day 101 years ago, the future Nobel Laureate and physicist Owen Chamberlain was born.

Together with Emilio Segrè, Chamberlain confirmed the existence of the proton's antiparticle, the antiproton. They proved its existence by performing an experiment with a powerful particle accelerator in 1955. Four years later, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

In his banquet speech, Chamberlain speaks about his co-laureate Segrè as well as physicist Enrico Fermi. Chamberlain describes Fermi as "the most intelligent man I have ever met".
