Everyone is talking about "hands-on" science learning. But what does that mean?

Are just hands-on activities enough?

The answer is "No". Hands-on activities are useful only when used with the right teaching practices.

At Advanced Learning Space, we use hands-on activities along with modern teaching practices (adopted from Next Generation Science Standards, USA) to help our students establish a strong foundation of CONCEPTS and SKILLS.

Congratulations to all those who participated in our science competition.

Project Based Learning (PBL) is not just about building models. "Building" is only a small part of the overall learning experience. The real learning value of PBL comes from following a well established process where the students - 1) Start by defining problem 2) Carry out guided research 3) Design the solution/model 4) Plan and execute the build 5) Showcases their work and finally 6) Reflects on the experience.

Each of these steps is critical and key to the overall learning experience. If executed correctly, students will not only enjoy learning about science, they will retain the concepts longer and be able to apply their knowledge a lot better than they would if they just read and memorize.

TO ALL THE PARTICIPANTS IN OUR SCIENCE COMPETITION

We are very excited about your participation and sincerely hope that this will be an interesting learning experience for you. As you know, there are exciting prizes to be won, so keep working on your project and submit it on or before Feb 7th, 2022.

We wanted to remind you of a few important things as you build your models:

1. Start with a little bit of research. Find information about a plant cell in your textbook or on the internet.

2. Once you have learned a little about plant cells, decide on what you will build. Think about how you will build it. Draw a "design" or "diagram" of what you will build on a piece of paper. Remember, design is as important as the model itself.

3. Please use everyday materials available at home to build your models. Be creative and think out of the box - use cardboard, common materials available in the kitchen, etc. The more creative you are in your choice of materials, the better it is.

4. Remember to submit a write-up or a video explaining how you designed and built the project.

As always, if you have any questions or need any help or guidance, please give us a call. Our goal is to make this a fun learning experience for you and we are happy to assist in any way we can.
