Introduction to IRON (Initial Registration of Overseas Nurses)
1. What is IRON course?
IRON course is a bridging course for overseas qualified nurses to be able to practice as registered nurse (RN) or enrolled nurse (EN) in Australia. The aim of this course is to assist overseas qualified nurses to embrace the knowledge and skills required to work as a nurse in Australia and provide support in the transition from nursing in their country of origin to nursing in Australia.
On successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to apply for registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority).
2. Entry Requirements for IRON
1) Must have completed Bachelor of Science in Nursing in your home country (Diploma holders can only become EN after IRON program)
2) Three months of nursing experience during the last 5 years
3) English requirement (see question 3)
4) Must hold a current AHPRA letter (For application of AHPRA letter, see question 4)
3. English Requirement for IRON
According to AHPRA, from 1 July 2015, IETLS, OET, PTE and TOEFL iBT are all acceptable and results from two sittings can be combined within 6 months from the first exam.
- IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components
- OET with a minimum score of B in each of the four components
- PTE (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills
- TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the minimum scores of 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing, and 23 for speaking.
4. How to apply for AHPRA letter to do IRON course?
Once an overseas qualified nurse satisfies the first three requirements in question 2, they can apply to AHPRA for assessment.
Fill and submit AGOS-40 form with the required documents of qualifications and work experience (for more information, refer to http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Codes-

The assessment by AHPRA normally takes 1-3 months. Once an applicant gets the Letter of Referral from AHPRA to do a bridging program, the applicant is eligible in enrolling the IRON course with Australian education provider.
