Shab-e-Qadr, often translated as the Night of Decree or the Night of Power, holds profound significance in Islam. It is believed to occur during the last ten days of Ramadan, although its exact date is not specified in the Quran. Instead, it is described as a night "better than a thousand months" (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3), indicating its immense spiritual value.
The significance of Shab-e-Qadr lies in the belief that it marks the night when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by Allah through the Angel Gabriel. This revelation marked the beginning of the prophethood of Muhammad and the commencement of the divine guidance contained within the Quran.
Muslims regard Shab-e-Qadr as a night of immense blessings, mercy, and forgiveness. It is believed that on this night, the gates of heaven are opened, and the angels descend to the earth with divine blessings and guidance. It is a time when prayers are readily accepted, sins are forgiven, and destinies are determined for the upcoming year.
The exact date of Shab-e-Qadr is not known, although it is commonly believed to occur on one of the odd-numbered nights during the last ten days of Ramadan, with the 27th night being the most widely observed. However, Islamic scholars suggest seeking this blessed night in the odd nights of the last ten days, through prayers, supplications, and acts of worship.
Muslims around the world observe Shab-e-Qadr with special prayers, recitation of the Quran, supplications (dua), and engaging in acts of charity and good deeds. Many spend the entire night in worship, seeking closeness to Allah and beseeching His mercy and forgiveness. Mosques are filled with worshippers engaged in prayers and reflection, seeking the blessings of this auspicious night.
The importance of Shab-e-Qadr is emphasized throughout the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet himself encouraged his followers to seek out this blessed night and to engage in acts of worship and devotion during its observance. In one of his sayings (hadith), Prophet Muhammad stated: "Whoever stands (in prayer) on the Night of Decree, with faith and expecting reward, will have all of his previous sins forgiven." (Sahih Bukhari)
In essence, Shab-e-Qadr serves as a reminder for Muslims to renew their faith, seek forgiveness for their shortcomings, and strive for spiritual growth and closeness to Allah. It is a night of reflection, gratitude, and devotion, offering believers an opportunity to draw nearer to their Creator and reap the abundant blessings and mercy that Allah bestows upon His servants during this auspicious time.
