Salami slicing: How China is eating into India’s territory | India News - Times of India 12/10/2024

I speak to Jayanta Kalita, Senior Editor, The Times of India, on how China's illegal, deceitful and forceful capture of patrolling areas, needs to be seen in terms of its salami slicing strategy. If the illegal capture of 26 patrolling points was not enough, after four years of the ongoing military standoff at Galwan, China has now suggested that its troops be allowed to patrol two critical areas in Arunachal Pradesh, which have historically been India's. This is the exact same modus operandi China has used earlier with India, and there is an urgent need to track patterns to understand how the modus operandi is put in place.

India gains ‘advantage’ over China as new Sri Lanka leader seeks to balance ties 02/10/2024

Post the election of Sri Lankan President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake to power, there has been a narrative that his Marxist leanings imply that he is pro-China. However, Dissanayake himself clarified, immediately post Sri Lankan elections that he does not want Sri Lanka to be sandwiched between India and China.

His primary focus is to enhance domestic economic stability. India has always wanted its partners in the neighbourhood to have independent foreign policies and not pro or anti any country or regional bloc. I speak to Maria Siow of the South China Morning Post about how Dissanayake's electoral win does not mean a win for China, over India.

India gains ‘advantage’ over China as new Sri Lanka leader seeks to balance ties New leader Dissanayake is a ‘practical nationalist’ who is likely to factor India’s security concerns into his foreign policy, analysts say.

Can nuclear power help mitigate the climate crises? 24/09/2024

In this article for the Hindustan Times, I write about how, despite the fact that nuclear power and its accumulation has often been used for military purposes, or for the purposes of deterrence, fact also remains that it has great potentials for averting a major non- traditional, global security threat, i.e. of the climate crisis. The capacity of nuclear energy to ensure our energy independence and to guarantee the production of low carbon electricity is priceless for tackling the climate energy humanity currently faces.

Neorealism or a focus on only furthering one's narrow selfish motives has become the dominant paradigm in the India-China bilateral, owing to China's military aggression as well as predatory economics. However, the fact also remains that it is impossible in this epoch of history to completely decouple from China. Even the most powerful country, the U.S. continues fluctuating between furthering cooperation and threats of decoupling.

In this article for Vol. 38, No. 1-2 of the China- India dialogue, I write about the existing channels for understanding economic challenges in the India-China hurdle, and how we must leverage the existing channels to aim for a slight improvement if not betterment of economic ties between the two.

India’s growing reliance on China poses challenge for U.S. trade strategy 02/09/2024

In this article for the Washington Post, I speak to Karishma Mehrotra about how decoupling from China completely is impossible for any country, and that holds true for India as well.

My designation in the article, nevertheless is incorrect and should be Associate Professor and not Assistant Professor.

India’s growing reliance on China poses challenge for U.S. trade strategy The United States is looking to Indian manufacturing as a way to reduce commercial ties with Chinese factories and avoid supply disruptions due to tensions.

AI and racism: How artificial intelligence promotes racist rants against Indians 30/08/2024

On August 16, a Chinese bot on X (formerly Twitter) attempted spreading misinformation on the Olympics, on how India and the U.S. are fighting over an Indian wrestler being overweight by 100 gms.

A Chinese racist slur for Indians was used by the bot, which Google Translate automatically translated into 'India'. ThinkFi.net and I explored other forms of AI translation for the racist slur and found most of them normalise the racist slur and translate it into 'India'. Racism has no place in the 21st century and tech giants with huge markets in India need to rectify this anomaly!

In today's Firstpost we write about how AI promotes racist rants against Indians.
