Women take the centre-stage in the development of any nation. Health of women is a cause for serious concern in developing countries. India, like most developing nations, has traditionally not been able to put ample focus on women’s health. Though male gender is more fragile in nature but ironically s*x ratio has always been adverse for the women in India (940/1000). Maternal Mortality rate is sti
ll 167 per lac live births. About 1/3rd of girls are married before the legal age. About 2/3rd women are anaemic and 32% women face spousal violence in the Haryana. Delhi, Punjab and Haryana may be economically progressive but have skewed indicators of women’s health issues as per the latest report of NFHS-4 despite legal provisions, incentive-based schemes, and media messages. The nation needs to urgently undertake a massive women’s healthcare drive to correct the situation. There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women, the biggest onus of which lies in the hands of the health professionals. Medical colleges need to develop socially responsible health professionals who provide equitable health services of the highest order. Ours being a rural medical college for women owes an additional responsibility to inculcate a favorable aptitude towards women health among the students of the institute. Smt. Savitribai Phule is perhaps the most suitable role model for this initiative, who, against all odds, became the first women teacher in the country, opened 18 schools dedicated to women education and started Infanticide prohibition homes. She died while caring for the patients of plague pandemic on 10th March 1897. Commemorating the death anniversary of Smt. Savitribai Phule, today 10th March, 2017 the Department of Community Medicine of Bhagat Phool Singh Govt. Medical College for Women, Khanpur Kalan takes the privilege to extend support to students of this prestigious institute whom we wish to be ‘The Ambassadors of Women Health’ via this page. It is a small initiative to motivate, encourage and guide the students who volunteer to work for the upliftment of women health status in the areas they wish to serve.
