The Jindal Centre for the Global South (JCGS) was pleased to inaugurate its Global South Sustainability & Resilience Series with a panel discussion on “Green Growth or Green Dependency? Rethinking Sustainability in the Global South.”

The discussion brought together Prof. (Dr.) Dr. Abhiroop Chowdhury, Dean, Jindal School of Environment & Sustainability; Ms. Shuva Raha, Fellow and Lead – International Cooperation, Council on Energy, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW); and Prof. (Dr.) Shreekant Gupta, Visiting Senior Fellow, Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP). The session was moderated by Prof. (Dr.) Hebatallah Adam, our Founder & Director, and Professor & Academic Dean, Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA), O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU).

The panel explored a critical question for the Global South: Can the green transition deliver sustainable and equitable development, or could it reproduce existing patterns of dependency in new forms? The conversation highlighted the importance of recognising different developmental realities, building domestic technological and productive capabilities, ensuring value addition, protecting natural capital, and making global sustainability standards more inclusive.

The Jindal Centre for the Global South (JCGS) hosted today the inaugural session of its Global South Diplomatic Dialogue Series: Conversations with Ambassadors, Diplomats and Global Leaders, featuring H.E. Mr. Suresh K. Reddy, Ambassador of India to Egypt, for a timely dialogue on “India–Egypt Relations under BRICS: Strategic Partnerships and Opportunities for the Global South.”

The dialogue was moderated by Prof. (Dr.) Hebatallah Adam, Founder and Director, Jindal Centre for the Global South, Professor and Academic Dean, Jindal School of International Affairs, O.P. Jindal Global University.

The conversation examined the evolving India–Egypt strategic partnership and its broader significance for the Global South, with particular focus on:

• Expanding India–Egypt trade, investment and economic cooperation
• New opportunities emerging from Egypt’s engagement with BRICS
• India and Egypt’s complementary roles across Africa, the Arab world and the wider Global South
• Advancing South–South cooperation through practical and outcome-oriented partnerships
• Development cooperation, technology, skills and knowledge-sharing
• The role of universities, think tanks and young scholars in strengthening Global South engagement

The dialogue highlighted the potential of India and Egypt to leverage their strategic positions, shared interests and regional partnerships to build stronger forms of cooperation and contribute to a more effective architecture of South–South cooperation.

JCGS extends its sincere appreciation to H.E. Ambassador Suresh K. Reddy for an insightful and engaging conversation, and to the students, faculty members and participants who joined this important inaugural dialogue.

The inaugural session marks the beginning of the Global South Diplomatic Dialogue Series—a platform for sustained engagement with diplomats, policymakers, scholars and global leaders on the transformations, opportunities and future of the Global South.

On 22 December 2025, we held a rich and engaging panel discussion on Coloniality of Being and Black Identity in Postcolonial African and South Asian Contexts, featuring Prof. A.O. Ayodele and Prof. Olusegun Adeyeri, and moderated by Prof. (Dr.) Hebatallah Adam.
The conversation brought forward cross-regional perspectives, postcolonial identities, and dialogues rooted in the Global South.
The panel discussion was organised in collaboration with the Global South Research Foundation and the Africa Dialogue Forum.

A discussion forum entitled “Sharm El Sheikh Summit for Peace – An Academic Reflection” was organized on 3 November 2025 at O.P. Jindal Global University. This discussion forum focused on the after-effects of the October 2025 Sharm El Sheikh Summit for Peace on the Gaza Peace Plan. The meeting highlighted the role of the Global South in the promotion of sustainable peace, concluding that justice, reconstruction, and international engagement, alongside a ceasefire, are essential for the achievement of sustainable peace.

The Jindal Centre for the Global South, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Economic Association and the Global South Research Foundation, recently hosted a guest lecture by Prof. Alex M. Thomas (Azim Premji University, Bengaluru) on “Understanding Political Economy: Histories, Theories, and the Global South”.

The session explored how economic ideas are shaped by political and historical contexts, moving beyond “neutral” models to reveal how paradigms influence policy and perception. From colonial legacies to debates between classical and marginalist schools, Prof. Thomas encouraged the audience to question dominant narratives and embrace pluralism in economic thought.

The event was also joined by Sushma S***a and Jaskaran Singh, whose contributions were important to the discussion.
An afternoon of critical dialogue, challenging conventional economics, and expanding the way we think about the Global South.
