"While speaking about the bravery of the hill princess Kuranganayani, queen of Swargadeo Rajeshwar Singha, one must recall how Raghav Moran of Hatichungi, despite having a hundred princesses at his disposal, could not tarnish her chastity, which was ultimately preserved by the sacrifice and bravery of her loyal attendant, Sonai.
Raghav Moran Barbarua had forcibly taken the Manipuri princess Kubadnoyani into his harem; however, he could not violate her religious virtue. Princess Kuranganayani was accompanied by a loyal attendant named Sonai. At night, Kuranganayani would extinguish the lamp saying, “Barbarua cannot sleep with the lamp lit,” and then, giving Sonai in her place, she would quietly move to another bed and sleep there.
In the evenings, Kuranganayani used to send food and drink to Swargadeo Lakshmi Singha through Sonai. Once, when Raghav Barbarua was walking outside his house, Kalita Hazarika, using Sonai’s help, plotted and managed to capture Raghav. Kuranganayani, who had long been a prisoner of the Morans, wept when she finally met her people and said,
“I am the daughter of the king of Manipur, the queen of the late Swargadeo, a hill princess — now if the country learns that I have become the wife of a Hatichungi man, what a shame it would be! But only Dharma knows the truth. I remained true to my virtue by extinguishing the lamp and sending Sonai in my place, saying, ‘Barbarua cannot sleep with the lamp light.’ I have preserved my virtue
