Khet par aam khana, talab mein nahana, bakri ke bachchon ke saath khelna, aur shaam ko chabutre par baith kar baatein karna…

I feel lucky that I’ve lived both village and city life. One gave me opportunities, the other gave me memories I’ll never forget.

Renowned Urdu poet Dr. Bashir Badr passed away in Bhopal on Thursday at the age of 91, bringing to a close a remarkable chapter in the history of Urdu poetry.

The 1987 Meerut riots proved to be a turning point in his life. His home was set ablaze during the violence, a tragedy that left a deep and lasting scar on him. The pain of that loss found expression in one of his most celebrated couplets:

"लोग टूट जाते हैं एक घर बनाने में, तुम तरस नहीं खाते बस्तियों जलाने में।"

In the aftermath of the riots, he moved to Bhopal, a city that would become his adopted home for the rest of his life.
