Kutchh diaries 5: Rogan Art
Our visit to Nirona was very exciting. One of the three arts we saw there was *Rogan art*

At Sun rogan art (rizwan s khatri) https://share.google/YcErDaeVu8yBog1Tf
Khatri ji explained us the tedious and risky process of making colours, and demonstrated the intricate fabric work. The most difficult part was, there was no rough sketch on cloth. Everything appeared directly from image in the mind!

Rogan art of Kutch is a unique, centuries-old textile art from Gujarat, India, featuring intricate designs painted with a thick, oil-based paint (Rogan, Persian for "oil") made from boiled castor oil and pigments, applied with a metal stylus onto cloth for vibrant, detailed patterns, often with mirror-image symmetry, and is now kept alive by only a few families in Nirona village.

Do visit Rizwan bhai if you ever happen to be in Kutchh.

More about Nirona in coming posts

Glad to host Satsangam Yatra , diaries for the upcoming event

What does learning look like when freedom is the starting point?

At The Learners Collective, Mumbai, children choose what, how, and when they learn.
Curiosity becomes the curriculum.
Community becomes the classroom.

Children co-create norms, participate in decisions, care for shared spaces, and grow through everyday experiences of collaboration, conflict, and responsibility.

More than a school, it is a living learning community—nurturing self-aware, confident, and grounded human beings.

✨ Join us on a learning journey to experience such innovative spaces firsthand.

कागज़ की नाव तो हर बच्चा बनता है। But it was unique experience for LC kids at Mandvi port to experience how actual small merchant ships of wood are built.

Kutch diaries 3: Lippan art Khamir
Lippan art, or mud-mirror work, is a traditional Indian mural craft from the Kutch known for its intricate, raised designs on walls using a mixture of clay, dung, and mirrors. This folk art traditionally decorated mud huts called bhungas
It looked very easy when was demonstrated. But to knead the mud, make a uniform thread, and paste it before it dries up, was a task.
The outcome is amazing!

Kutchh Diaries:2
When in Bhuj and exploring local arts where else can a person stay but Khamir

Khamir primarily refers to a renowned craft resource centre in Kutch, Gujarat, India, dedicated to preserving and promoting the region's traditional crafts, heritage, and cultural ecology, meaning "intrinsic pride" in the local language and "to ferment" in Hindi, reflecting its goal of revitalizing artisanal traditions

We explored different styles of cloth painting there. Mr Khatri, who is representing the only family of artisans specialized in Vela style of block painting demonstrated the technique and art to us. We too tried our hands ad got along the beautiful pieces of painted cloth.

Let's see how we use them in LC now.

Kutchh diaries: 1
For last few years, we have been taking children and parents out to some experiential learning trips. This time Limangi Jain carved out a trip to Kutchh with many hands-on activities. All the adults also participated enthusiastically.

In Bhujodi, we visited Shyamjibhai's place where he supports all the local artisans and promotes the local breed of black cotton.

We understood the journey of cotton to fabric. Tried our hands on Charkha, dyed it indigo using tradintional method, weaved the yarn, and witnessed the final product
