A couple of decades back, Siliguri had hardly a dozen schools which offered 12th standard classes. Prominent among them were Siliguri Boys High School and Siliguri Girls High

School. The two schools are located almost adjacent to one another. Rivalry amongst these two schools for better board exam result is still quite legendary. So are the stories of affairs between the students of the two schools. Among English medium schools, Don Bosco (Boys) in second mile area and St. Josephs (Girls) in Matigara were prominent. Over the last two decades a large number of schools have come up in and around Siliguri providing quality education. Most of the new schools are privately owned and English medium. The number of government schools have not increased significantly. In spite of the increase in numbers, the old schools such as Don Bosco, St Josephs and Siliguri Girls still remain the favorite among much of the population
