Teachers Day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India's second president, a philosopher, scholar, and above all, a teacher at heart. The story behind the date is a genuinely lovely one, when Radhakrishnan became president in 1962, his students and admirers wanted to celebrate his birthday, and he asked them to observe the day instead as a tribute to teachers everywhere. That request turned into a national tradition, with schools and colleges across the country marking the day through student-led functions, speeches, cultural performances, and no shortage of small, heartfelt gestures aimed at the people who shaped classrooms and, quite often, entire lives.
