Children are God’s blessings, not our possessions. If you decide to have children, be extremely cautious of your role as parents so you can fulfill this immense responsibility.
1. Show Affection and Mercy Towards Children.
The Prophet (saw) loved children. He would kiss them often, an expression of his love and mercy towards them.
2. Treat All Your Children Equally.
The Prophet (saw) said:
“Your children have the right of receiving equal treatment, as you have the right that they should honor you.” (Abu Dawoud).
“Do justice among your sons (kids),” and repeated it thrice.” (Muslim)
3. Be Involved in Your Children’s Lives.
Taking an active interest in your children’s lives is paramount to establish a connection with them. Being a parent, is not just about financially providing for children, rather parents should be there for them emotionally and spiritually as well. For example, when the pet bird of a young child, Abu Umair, died, Prophet Muhammad (saw) went out of his way to try and console him.
4. Pray for your Children.
Prayer is one of the most powerful ways to protect your children, so they become God fearing, kind and successful individuals.
