Himachal Pradesh has undertaken several educational initiatives aimed at improving access, inclusion, teacher capacity and preservation of the state’s cultural heritage. The Himachal Sanskrit Academy promotes Sanskrit education through competitions, Kavi Sammelans, Karma-kāṇḍa and Jyotiṣa Shivirs, and research projects. These initiatives seek to strengthen the study and wider understanding of Sanskrit among students and the public.

Teacher capacity building is another important component of the state’s education system. During 2025-26, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Solan, and Government College of Teacher Education, Dharamshala, organised training programmes for 1,146 teaching and non-teaching staff of schools and colleges. The state also provides free education in Government Colleges to girls without tuition fees and extends free and compulsory education to children with 40% or above disabilities, with exemptions from applicable fees and funds up to the college level.

Tourism is an important pillar of Himachal Pradesh’s economy, generating employment, supporting local enterprises and contributing to regional development. The Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation acts as the nodal agency for tourism promotion, infrastructure development, creation of new tourism products and regulation of tourism activities. The state has increasingly focused on diversifying tourism beyond traditional destinations and reducing seasonal concentration.

Government initiatives include activity-based, adventure, rural, eco and cultural tourism, along with the development of new destinations under initiatives such as “Nai Raahein Nai Manzilein”. The National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS&LUP) has developed India’s first soil texture map, providing detailed digital information on soil characteristics across the country.

NBSS&LUP is headquartered in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and functions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

The map provides digitised soil classification data at hectare level, enabling more detailed assessment of soil conditions for agricultural planning.

Soil texture refers to the relative proportion of sand, silt and clay present in soil and is an important physical property for soil classification.

The mapping exercise used field studies, remote sensing, satellite imagery and artificial intelligence, combining conventional soil surveys with modern geospatial technologies.

The data can help in crop suitability assessment, irrigation planning, land-use planning and allocation of agricultural resources.

Village-level information can also support government agencies in developing more location-specific agricultural plans and interventions.

NBSS&LUP had developed India’s first soil depth map a year earlier, while its next focus is mapping soil water retention and absorption capacity.

10-year-old Rudraveer Gangta of Himachal Pradesh won a bronze medal at the Asia Open Short Track Speed Skating Championship held in Dehradun.

Rudraveer was among 11 ice skaters from Himachal Pradesh selected for the Indian national squad for the championship.

Solan district of Himachal Pradesh has emerged as the fifth-richest district in India in terms of per-capita GDP, according to the Economic Survey 2024–25.

The district recorded a per-capita income of approximately ₹8.10 lakh, significantly higher than Himachal Pradesh’s state average of ₹2.83 lakh.

Solan’s economic performance is closely associated with its strong industrial and manufacturing base, particularly in the Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN) region.

The BBN industrial area has a major concentration of pharmaceutical manufacturing units, making the district an important industrial centre in Himachal Pradesh.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted India’s industrial sector, affecting factory operations, employment and production. Data from the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) shows that industrial employment declined during the pandemic period, particularly in 2020-21, as lockdowns, supply-chain disruptions and reduced economic activity affected manufacturing units. The disruption was followed by a gradual recovery as economic activity resumed and industrial operations normalised.

The recovery became increasingly visible from 2021-22 onwards. In 2023-24, total estimated employment in the ASI-covered industrial sector increased by 5.92% over the previous year. The sector added more than 57 lakh jobs between 2014-15 and 2023-24, indicating substantial long-term employment expansion despite the pandemic shock. The average number of persons engaged per operating factory also increased from 80 in 2020-21 to 92 in 2023-24.

For competitive examinations, this trend is important for understanding the relationship between economic shocks, industrial resilience, employment generation, manufacturing growth and post-pandemic recovery.

Himachal Pradesh has become the fifth Indian state to prohibit analogue paneer, following concerns related to food safety, adulteration and misleading labelling.

The state-wide order, issued on 20 August 2026, prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of non-dairy analogue paneer being represented as genuine paneer.

Analogue paneer refers to paneer-like products in which milk fat is replaced partly or substantially with vegetable oils, plant fats or other non-dairy ingredients.

The restriction applies to food business operators, including restaurants, hotels, dhabas, cloud kitchens, hostels and caterers.

Non-dairy alternatives are not prohibited when they meet applicable requirements, but they must be clearly declared and not sold as genuine dairy paneer.

The order was issued by the Commissioner of Food Safety under Section 30(2)(a) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and remains valid for one year.

Food Safety Officers can inspect premises, collect samples, seize non-compliant products and initiate action under applicable food-safety laws.

The other four states that have taken similar action are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

The Himachal Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (HPPTCL) plays a critical role in strengthening the state’s electricity transmission infrastructure and facilitating the evacuation of power from generating stations. Its projects are particularly important for Himachal Pradesh because of the state’s substantial hydropower potential and geographically challenging terrain. The corporation focuses on developing transmission systems required for reliable and efficient power evacuation across the state.

According to the Himachal Pradesh Economic Survey 2025-26, HPPTCL had commissioned cumulative transmission projects with a capacity of 3,944 MVA, covering 752.17 circuit km of transmission lines, with an investment of ₹2,690.25 crore. Green Energy Corridor-I (GEC-I) has already added 846.5 MVA capacity, while Green Energy Corridor-II is planned to add a further 252 MVA. These projects are intended to improve transmission capacity and support the integration of renewable energy into the state’s power network.
