Basant Panchami or Vasant Panchami, also known as Saraswati Puja or Basant Panchami, is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated across various regions of India and Nepal. Falling on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu calendar month of Magha, typically in late January or early February, Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of the spring season. This occasion holds significant cultural, religious, and social importance, bringing together communities to honour the arrival of spring and seek blessings for knowledge and creativity.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a list of social media handles that are using the name and logo of the board and spreading misinformation to the public. The board further added that there is only one official account of CBSE on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) which goes with the handle ‘’. Students, teachers, and other stakeholders to take note of the same.

“It has come to notice of Central Board of Secondary Education that the following handles have been found to be using the name and/or logo of CBSE , with a view to mislead the general public on X ( Formerly Twitter)," the board said in a press release.

The central board also added that appropriate action is being taken against these fake handles. “It is hereby informed that appropriate action is being initiated against these Social Media Handles. The public is hereby cautioned and advised to follow only the official X handle of CBSE, which is for verified and authentic information pertaining to CBSE," it said.

“CBSE will not be responsible hereinafter for any information given by any other source using the name and logo of CBSE in any of the style on social media platforms and accessed by the public," it further added.

In a first-of-its-kind move, the West Bengal government has introduced 20% reservation for women candidates in the state’s government polytechnics, industrial training institutes and vocational training centres. According to a report by Times of India, a notification regarding this was issued in December 2023 by the Department of Technical Education, Training and Skill Development.

The move comes in the wake of significant increase in registration of girl students in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEE). According to reports, around 43,121 girls will write the WBJEE in 2024, 10,176 more than last year – a rise by about 23%.

According to the TOI report, the notification stated that There will be a reservation of 20% seats for female candidates uniformly in all verticals and 50% district domicile quota, applicable from 2024-25 academic year. If seats remain vacant after second counselling, those will be converted to open category seats.

It further added that admission for these skill development courses will be done through a “centralised admission portal” along with a “common application form” with “fees collected online” to ease the process for the applicants.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM Shillong) organised the Shillong Water Hackathon on February 7. The event was conducted under the Meghalaya government’s International Water Conclave, which will be held on February 9 and 10 in Shillong. The hackathon aims at addressing and resolving concerns related to water pollution, conservation, and management.

The winners in the individual category of the Shillong Water Hackathon were Team Spirit from KCG College of Technology, Chennai. They were followed by Snehalt24 from Indian School of Public Policy and Dani.ce21 from Bannari Amman Institute of Technology were first and second runners-up, respectively.

The winners in the Institutional category of the Shillong Water Hackathon were Jerraswamynathan from Dual Triangles Private Limited. It was followed by the team from Meghalaya Institute.

The hackathon aimed at fostering collaboration and meaningful dialogue among participants from diverse backgrounds, including students, technology experts, innovators, coders, influencers, and startup enthusiasts. The participants explored innovative ways to engage communities and leverage technology, such as sensors, data analytics, and mobile applications, to monitor, manage, and enhance water-related processes.

The hackathon focused on leveraging data to gain valuable insights into water quality, usage patterns, and other relevant parameters to enable informed decision-making. Participants were also encouraged to develop prototypes or proof-of-concept solutions with high social impact, which could be further improved or implemented to address specific water challenges.

The government on Monday introduced a bill in Lok Sabha that seeks to do away with malpractices and irregularities in competitive examinations, with provisions for a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine up to ₹1 crore.

The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Bill, 2024, introduced by Union Minister Jitendra Singh comes in the aftermath of the cancellation of a series of competitive exams including the teacher recruitment exam in Rajasthan, Common Eligibility Test (CET) for Group-D posts in Haryana, recruitment exam for junior clerks in Gujarat and constable recruitment examination in Bihar, following question paper leaks.

The Bill envisages bringing greater transparency, fairness, and credibility to the public examination systems and reassuring the youth that their sincere efforts will be fairly rewarded and that their future is safe.

Some of the objectives of the Bill

*The Bill seeks to act against organized gangs, mafia elements, and those indulging in malpractices, without targeting students. Government officials found guilty will also not be spared.

*Constitution of a high-level national technical committee on public examinations that will make recommendations to make the computerized examination process more secure.

*The committee will develop protocols for insulating digital platforms, devise ways and means for developing fool proof IT security systems, ensure electronic surveillance of examination centers, and formulate national standards and services for both IT and physical infrastructure to be deployed for conduct of competitive examinations.

*Deter nefarious elements from using impersonation methods and indulging in paper leaks and other malpractices.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has become the first IIT to introduce sports quota for its undergraduate admissions and will create two supernumerary seats in each course from the 2024-25 academic session, according to its director V Kamakoti.

Currently, the IITs do not have a sports quota while many of the country's premier universities, including Delhi University, do.

"Starting from 2024-2025 academic session, IIT Madras will offer two supernumerary seats per undergraduate programme for Indian nationals under the Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) programme. We are the first IIT to introduce sports quota and the idea is to reward and encourage students who have achieved a certain level of excellence in sports of their choice," Kamakoti told PTI.Two seats per programme will be allotted through the SEA. While one will be gender-neutral, other will be female-only," he added.

To be eligible for admission through SEA, candidates must have secured a position in the Common Rank List (CRL) or category-wise rank list in the JEE (Advanced) and must have won at least one medal in any national and international-level sports competition in the last four years.

The candidate will also be required to have obtained the minimum required class 12 marks as per the eligibility criteria for IIT admissions.
"A separate Sports Rank List (SRL) will be prepared based on the total score obtained by the candidates based on their performance in specific list of sports. The seat allotment will be done based on SRL only," he explained.

The Education Ministries of India and Finland held discussions on their individual policies regarding School Education, Vocational Education, and Higher Education.

Both parties have agreed to investigate the potential for a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding collaboration across different areas of education.

An official release by Ministry of Education stated, "The two sides showed special interest in collaborating on capacity building of teachers, STEM educators and leveraging digital technology in various areas of education. Research collaborations were another area of common interest, especially in areas of new and emerging technologies, AI, Quantum Tech, sustainability, climate change. The Indian side also briefed upon new regulations brought in for internationalization of higher education under NEP 2020."

They also investigated the potential for developing specific proposals and action plans to encourage a more substantial partnership.
