SPARK Meghalaya: A Principal’s Perspective from the Field

Across Meghalaya, SPARK (School Programmes in Articulation, Resilience and Kindness) continues to strengthen learning environments in government and government-aided schools through a focus on confidence, communication, social-emotional learning, and inclusive classroom practices. Recognised by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, as one of the country’s national best practices under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, SPARK reflects Meghalaya’s commitment to ensuring that every child feels confident, supported, and capable of learning with joy.

In this interview, S. K. Tiwary, Principal of Jirang Government Higher Secondary School, Ri Bhoi District, shares his experience of hosting SPARK in his campus and witnessing its impact on students. From building confidence in speaking to strengthening resilience, curiosity, and peer support inside the classroom, he highlights how SPARK has helped create a safer and more inclusive learning space for his students, one that aligns with the broader goals of equity, wellbeing, and holistic development emphasised in NEP 2020.

As SPARK expands to more SSA schools across Meghalaya under SEMAM-SSA, in collaboration with the Department of Education and implemented by Avenues Meghalaya, voices from the field like Principal Tiwary’s reaffirm the programme’s purpose: to nurture articulate, compassionate, and future-ready learners, one campus at a time.

Listen to Principal Tiwary speak about what SPARK has meant for his school and students in Jirang, and why programmes like these matter for the classrooms of today and tomorrow.

When Haphi stepped up to deliver her first-ever public speech, in front of over 600 people, her voice trembled, her hands shook, and her heart raced. But she remained standing and went on speaking.

The audience didn't just watch, they lifted her. The hall was filled with warmth and encouragement from her friends, teachers, trainers and guests.

That's what SPARK is all about - helping students like Haphi learn to articulate with confidence, rise with resilience, and grow in a community where kindness leads.

Every child carries a quiet dream. On this Children’s Day, we celebrate one of them.

In this first episode of The Light Within, Ameliza from St. Joseph’s HSS, Shillong speaks about fear, effort, confidence - and her dream of becoming a cardiovascular surgeon.

About SPARK:

✨ SPARK Milestones ✨

Shri Jagdish Chelani, IAS, State Project Director, SEMAM-SSA, officially released the SPARK Student Handbook and the first edition of the programme newsletter, Inside ARK, at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, on 5th November 2025. The occasion marked an important step in the journey of building confident, compassionate, and capable learners across the state through SPARK.

The event, held alongside ten other campuses across six districts, also celebrated the closing of Phase 2 of SPARK, which has reached more than 2,000 students in government and government-aided schools across Meghalaya.

The day featured reflections from education leaders, district administrators, teachers, and students - voices that captured the true spirit of SPARK: spaces that nurture courage, curiosity, and kindness.

"When I finally spoke, no one laughed. Instead, my classmates and trainers encouraged me.” - Bornali Rabha, Class X, Rymbai Government Higher Secondary School.

This is the kind of space we see in SPARK classrooms - where students are heard, supported, and given the time to find their voice.

Over the past two weeks, something meaningful grew inside classrooms across Meghalaya. Students, teachers, and trainers held together spaces of learning - speaking, listening, reflecting, asking questions, and supporting one another. Little by little, voices opened. Confidence took shape. Kindness became a choice practiced every day.

Today, as we close this phase of SPARK across our campuses, we are grateful for the journey we have shared. More than 2,000 students took part - each with their own story of courage. Some spoke in front of a room for the first time. Some learned to work together without fear. Some discovered new curiosity in subjects they once felt unsure of. And many learned to recognise their own strengths.

At St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, this shared journey was marked by the release of the SPARK Student Handbook and the first edition of our newsletter, Inside ARK - created to accompany students and teachers as these practices continue in everyday school life.

To every teacher who stood beside their students, to every trainer who facilitated spaces of care, and to every young learner who tried - even when it felt difficult - thank you. Your effort made these classrooms feel safe, supportive, and full of possibility.

And to all our students, the spark is already within you. Carry it gently. And let it grow.
