Special Lecture on Indian Knowledge System (IKS)

William Carey University, Meghalaya, organized a Special Lecture on the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) on 14 July 2026. The programme was jointly organized by the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Cell and the Research and Development Cell of the University.

The keynote lecture was delivered by Retd. Prof. (Dr.) Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, a renowned academician, Chairman of the Yogakshem Institute of Bharat Studies, and General Secretary and Treasurer of the Indian Political Science Association. In his insightful address, Prof. Sharma elaborated on the philosophical foundations, scientific relevance, and contemporary significance of the Indian Knowledge System.

He emphasized the importance of integrating India's rich traditional knowledge with modern education, research, and innovation to build a holistic and sustainable future.

The lecture inspired faculty members, researchers, and students to explore interdisciplinary approaches rooted in India's intellectual heritage. It also encouraged meaningful discussions on the role of IKS in addressing contemporary global challenges while preserving and promoting India's cultural and knowledge traditions.

Celebration of the International Day of Yoga 2026

The International Day of Yoga was celebrated with great enthusiasm on 19th June 2026 at William Carey University, Meghalaya, highlighting the importance of yoga in promoting holistic health and well-being.

The programme commenced with an inaugural address by Dr. Satabdi Banerjee, NEP Coordinator, who emphasized yoga as an integral part of India's traditional knowledge system and its continued relevance in modern life. The guests were warmly welcomed by Dr. Abhishisha Mawkhiew, Assistant Professor, Department of Rural Development.

The Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Soma Bhowmick, addressed the gathering and spoke on the significance of yoga in maintaining physical health, mental well-being, and a balanced lifestyle. The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Ibameaimon Pohtam, Assistant Professor, Department of Dravyaguna, North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homeopathy, Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, who highlighted the scientific, therapeutic, and holistic benefits of yoga.

A guided yoga session was conducted by Ms. Eugenia Davida Hek, Yoga Instructor, Escape Yoga Studio, along with her assistant, Ms. Priya. During the session, participants practiced various basic asanas, pranayama, and meditation techniques, focusing on physical fitness, mental peace, and stress management.

Faculty members, students, and staff actively participated in the programme, demonstrating their collective commitment to adopting a healthy and balanced lifestyle. The celebration concluded with a message encouraging everyone to make yoga a regular part of their daily lives for personal well-being, inner harmony, and sustainable living.

The Department of Psychology and Counselling, Department of Social Work (MSW), and Department of Fashion participated in the International AIDS Candle light memorial programme conducted by MSNP and MACS held at the Youth Hostel, Shillong on 18th June 2026. The event aimed to create awareness about HIV/AIDS, promote understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage community participation towards prevention and support.

The programme provided an enriching experience for the students and faculty members as they engaged with various awareness activities, discussions, and presentations focusing on HIV/AIDS-related issues. Participants gained valuable insights into the importance of education, counselling, empathy, and social responsibility in addressing the challenges faced by individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.

The students from the Department of Psychology and Counselling explored the mental health aspects of HIV/AIDS, including the importance of emotional support, counselling, and psychological well-being. The MSW students gained exposure to the social dimensions of HIV/AIDS, such as community support, advocacy, and the need to address stigma and discrimination. The Department of Fashion contributed to the event by highlighting the role of creativity and expression in spreading awareness and promoting social messages.

Overall, the event was a meaningful learning experience that encouraged collaboration among different disciplines. It helped the participants understand the significance of awareness, compassion, and collective action in building an inclusive and supportive society for people living with HIV/AIDS.

William Carey University, Meghalaya has published an edited book entitled ‘Viksit Bharat@2047: The Role of North East India in India's Development Trajectory’ that was released on 12 May 2026.The book is a compilation of the papers presented in the two-Day National Seminar on the theme Viksit Bharat@2047: The Role of North East India in India's Development Trajectory, organized by the School of Social Sciences & Humanities, William Carey University in collaboration with Indian Political Science Association (IPSA), on the 30th and 31st October 2025. This book was edited by Prof. Balensha D. Nongrum (Editor in Chief) and Dr. Gaithoiliu Phaomei (Editor). Copies of the book were presented to His Excellency, Hon’ble Governor, Meghalaya, Sri. C. H. Vijayashankar ji on Friday, 12th of June 2026 at Lok Bhawan, Meghalaya. University remains grateful for his appreciation and kind gesture of acceptance.
The book was presented by Prof. Soma Bhowmick, Vice Chancellor, William Carey University, Meghalaya and Prof. Balensha D. Nongrum. The book puts forward several avenues that North East India can contribute towards India’s development in specific fields of Agriculture, Information Technology, Inclusive Health Care, Water Management, Implementation of schemes (like Jal Jeevan Mission, etc), Integrating Indigenous Governance, India’s Foreign Policy, Indian Knowledge System (IKS), Tribal Development, Integrating Traditional Educational Institutions, Women’s Economic Contribution, Indigenous Pedagogical Tools for Cultural, Moral and Social Development, among others.

The Department of Psychology and Counselling successfully organized a two-day workshop conducted by the Resource Person Miss Aibatphida Nylla Lyngdoh ( Counselling Psychologist). Students and faculty from the Department of Education also attended the programme. Day 1 focused on the theme Trauma-Informed Therapy. Day 2 featured two themes: Indigenous Concepts and Models of Personality and Play Therapy for Children with Special Needs. The sessions were interactive, informative, and provided valuable learning experiences for all participants.

NSS Activities of WCU Highlighted at State-Level Consultative Meeting

The State NSS Cell Meghalaya, Office of the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education, Shillong, Meghalaya, organised a Consultative Meeting with Dr. Palvi Jain Govil along with NSS Programme Officers and Coordinators from various colleges and universities today at St. Anthony's College Shillong.

During the meeting, the State NSS Officer, Shri F. Rumnong, highlighted several outstanding activities conducted by NSS units across Meghalaya. Among them, three activities conducted by the NSS Cell of William Carey University Meghalaya were recognised and highlighted as best activities.

World Bee Day Observed at William Carey University, Meghalaya

The EIACP Hub of State Council of Science Technology & Environment in collaboration with William Carey University Meghalaya observed World Bee Day 2026 at the university auditorium on 20 May 2026 to promote awareness on bee conservation and environmental sustainability.

The programme featured presentations by Dr. R. Eugene Lamare and Dr. Shngainlang Khongsti on the importance of bees and the 2026 World Bee Day theme, “Bee Together for the People and the Planet.”

Local bee farmer Khlanhiwot Lamare also shared practical insights on sustainable beekeeping and rural livelihood development.

An interactive quiz session was conducted for students, and the programme concluded with a valedictory address and group photograph.
