HUGO GAMBOIAS, DIOGO PASSOS (Portugal)

HUGO GAMBOIAS
Hugo Gamboias was born in Coimbra, on May 23rd 1988. He began his studies in Portuguese guitar, at the Escola de Guitarra, Viola e Fado of Coimbra, with professor Ricardo Dias. The following year he continued his studies in the Coimbra’s Academic Association and began to accompany some of the city’s fado most celebrated performers. Hugo Gamboias is inspired by the music of Carlos Paredes, the greatest exponent of Portuguese guitar, example and technique of Coimbra. In 2012, he started his collaboration with the cultural association Fado ao Centro, where he is currently one of the resident musicians. After completing his master’s degree, he joined the Music course at Coimbra’s Superior School of Education, to explore and deepen his theoretical knowledge.The following year he joined the punk rock band Fitacola, where he has been playing electric guitar and in 2015, the project Pensão Flôr, taking the roots of the Portuguese guitar to other musical adventures, going through fado, tango, bossa nova and morna. He also began teaching Portuguese guitar at the Fado ao Centro Music School where he currently is the coordinator.During the year of 2017, he participated in Pedro Caldeira Cabral’s masterclass Acerca da Cítara Portuguesa, where he debut the original theme Variações Sob Memórias Perdidas. In the same year he began studying the Lisbon style of the Portuguese guitar with master Custódio Castelo.Throughout his musical career, in collaboration with Fado ao Centro, he has taken Coimbra’s fado and its music to the biggest concert halls in Portugal and around the world with performances Spain, French, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland and Brazil. Simultaneous to his education, Hugo participated in several Coimbra’s Fado CDs, where he contributed with original soundtracks with instrumental music and for voice. In 2018, he wasinvited to participate in the soundtrack of the film Pedro e Inês. In 2019, he began to prepare his own CD, which brings together the original instrumental themes he composed over ten years.Hugo Gamboias will perform with Diogo Passos who will accompany him on the Classical Guitar.

DIOGO PASSOS
Diogo Passos was born in Porto, on 9th 1991. By the age of 9 he started his musical education learning the Piano at Centro Cultural Musical in Santo Tirso, where he finished the 3rd degree. Then he started to study the Classical Guitar at the same institution under the guidance of Professor Óscar Flecha, where he finished the 6th degree. He attended the masterclasses of Dejan Ivanovic, Joaquin Clerch, Joaquim Santos Simões and Miguel Carvalhinho. He also studied with Amadeu Magalhães and Rui Poço Ferreira. Nowadays he’s a student at the Masters in Musical Teaching at Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas (ESART) from Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco (IPCB), where he also proceeds his guitar studies with Miguel Carvalhinho and João Tiago Correia.In 2014 he finished his Bachelor in Music (special context option) at Escola Superior de Educação from Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra.During his 1st Bachelor period (2011-2014) he was Artistic Director of Estudantina Universitária de Coimbra, founded Grupo de Fado Canto da Noite and was also a member of Grupo de Cordas da Secção de Fado da Associação Académica de Coimbra. Also during the same period he performed in many special academic ocasions such Serenata da Festa das Latas e Imposição de Insígnias (2011, 2012, 2013) and Serenata Mounumental (2012, 2013, 2014); he toured at EUA, Kosovo, Poland, Sao Tome and Prince, Spain, United Kingdom; he recorded the a CD “ComTradições” (2012) and was the Artistic Director of the show “Concerto para Coimbra” (2014).He recorded the CD “Coimbra Abril: Fados em Canções” of António Dinis that was distinguished with Prémio Edmundo Bettencourt in 2015. He also recorded and produced the CD “Margens da Noite” (2018) from the same author.In 2019 he finished his Bachelor in Music (Instrument option – Classical Guitar) at ESARTfrom IPCB. In his last year of bachelor he had the function of university monitor at ESART.He was involved in musical community projects at Hospital Psiquiátrico Sobral Cid, where he worked in partnership with the occupational therapy service from that institution.He performed alongside names as Né Ladeiras, Janita Salomé, Vitorino.He works actively in the defense and promotion of Coimbra’s Song, performing weekly at different places of the city of Coimbra, nationally and worldwide. In 2018 he toured in EUAwith Coro dos Antigos Orfeonistas da Universidade de Coimbra and Italy with Grupo de Fado Canto da Noite.

DUO KITHARSIS (Romania)

Duo Kitharsis formed by Alexandra Petrișor and Dragoș Horghidan, has been active since 2009.
After graduating as solo artists from the Faculty of Music Performance, The National University of Music Bucharest, under the guidance of their guitar professor, Cătălin Stefănescu-Pătrașcu, they pursued a Master’s degree as a guitar duo at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart with Duo Kaltchev, Ivo and Sofia Kaltchev. Since 2013 they have been studying at Conservatoire de Strasbourg under the guidance of one of the most well-known guitar duos in the world, Duo Melis, Alexis Muzurakis and Susana Prieto.
In 2016 they successfully graduated with a Masters’ degree from HEAR Strasbourg (Music Academy of Strasbouurg) and at University of Strasbourg with excellent distinctions.
Duo Kitharsis have taken part in different competitions with the following distinctions:
1st Prize at IX.Transilvania International Guitar Competition, Cluj Napoca (Romania) 2011.
2nd Prize at X.European Classical Guitar Competition”Enrico Mercatali”, Gorizia (Italy) 2013.

1st Prize at “Concorso di Esecuzione Musicale ”Citta di Piove di Sacco”, Padova (Italia) 2014
1st Prize at III. “Concorso Internazionale di Esecuzione Musicale”, Castel Ritaldi (PG), (Italia) 2014.
GRAND PRIX at IX.”International Guitar Course and Competition”, Olsztyn, (Poland) 2014.
2nd Prize at 2nd Ligita Liechtensteiner Gitarrentage Guitar Duo Competition, Liechtenstein 2016.
1st Prize at 20th ‘’Ciutat d’Elx’’ Chamber Music with Guitar International Competition, Elche, Spain 2018.
Duo Kitharsis has performed internationally with concerts in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Poland, including at guitar festivals. They successfully performed at Saint Martin-in-the-Fields in London receiving standing ovations. They also performed in Paris at the Hôtel de Soubise – Archives nationales in the concert series organized by the “Jeunes Talents”Association and in the “Nouveaux Talents” series held at the The Auditorium – Cité de la musique et danse in Strasbourg.
Duo Kitharsis played Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s “Concerto for two guitars and orchestra” in national premiere with the National Radio Bucharest Orchestra in 2015. Since then, they have been invited to perform regularly with the orchestras all around the world.
They have also been invited to perform in some of the most prestigious concert halls: The Romanian Atheneum, Sutu Palace, Mogosoaia Palace, Cantacuzino Palace, Peleș Castle, Bran Castle, just to name a few. In 2014, the third edition of the extraordinary tour “Music in Romania’s Palaces” featured Duo Kitharsis as the protagonists and proved to be a great success among classical music lovers.
