Dr. L Kamal Singh (1899-1935) was born at a time when there was much ferment in Manipur. The British conquered Manipur in 1891 after the battle of Khongjom where many heroes of the land sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their motherland. Before this historic event, Manipur was an independent Asiatic country though small geographically and demographically. But it was a terror to its neighbours like Burma, many states of what we now call Assam, Tripura and parts of China. After the British conquest of Manipur, the land passed through many vicissitudes under a feudal Raj. It was during the early decades of the 20t century that a band of educated patriotic writers heralded a renaissance in the arts and literature of Manipur. The period witnessed the birth of pioneers like Hijam Ananghal (1892-1943), Kh. Chaoba (1896-1950), Hijam Irabot (1896-1951), H. Nabadwichandra (1897-1946), Ashangbam Minaketan (1906-1995), Arambam Dorendrajit (1907-1944), to name only a few, who were the precursors of modern Manipuri literature in all its forms. They made a rediscovery of Manipur’s past glory, lamented the loss of freedom in subdued and subtle expressions and articulated a renewed sense of patriotism. They were in fact the major stars of the constellation of parts who shed the lustre of patriotism, nationalism, national consciousness and reawakening and brought an efflorescence and lyrical outburst in modern Manipuri literature.
