Some good decisions taken by the GST council today which include the resizing of the number of products under the 28% category.
It just makes all of us wonder as to why all of this was not done earlier. Positive change is good but adaptability to such change is of paramount importance. Let us wait and watch how the story unravels....

Summary of Recent Notifications issued by the Government:
1. The turnover limit for persons who wish to opt for the composition scheme has been increased to Rs. 1 crore
2. Service providers whose turnover is less than Rs. 20 lakhs annually are not exempt from registration if they make inter-state supply of goods or services. Please be aware that this benefit is given only to service providers and not to persons making inter-state supplies of goods
3. For small businesses having a turnover upto Rs. 1.5 crore, GSTR-1, 2 and 3 can now be filed on a quarterly basis. However, for the months from July to September, they have to be filed once a month. Additionally, tax has to be paid once a month and also GSTR-3B has to be filed once a month
4. The controversial Section 9(4) of CGST Act, 2017 and Section 5(4) of the IGST Act, 2017 (Payment of tax under reverse charge in case of payment to unregistered dealers) has now been suspended till 31-03-2018. This shall provide a huge relief to taxpayers grappling with working capital issues
Overall, it can be said that the Government has taken cognizance of the problems faced by the general public and has mitigated their problems to a great extent. However, it is very weird as to why these measures were not contained in the initial legislation itself rather than first imposing it on everyone and then rescinding it.
In all sincerity

GST Overview and Understanding:
Section 7 of the CGST Act, 2017 defines the term "Supply". The term Supply is very important in the context of the GST law as it denotes the taxable event, the point of chargeability.
For GST to be applicable, there has to be Supply and the said Supply must be taxable under the GST Act.
Let us look into the definition with greater detail in my next post.
