Unit cells are classified in 7 crystal systems by noting the rotational symmetry elements they possess. For example, a CUBIC unit cell has four three-fold axis in tetrahedral array, MONOCLINIC unit cell has one two-fold axis etc. There are only 14 distinct space lattice in three dimensions called Bravais Lattices.
