The Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Climate Change, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, successfully hosted a seminar titled “From Soil to Sky: Understanding Land–Atmosphere Coupling and Early Warning Systems” by Dr. Karthikeyan Lanka, IIT Bombay, on 24 November 2025 at CE-103.

Dr. Lanka shared key insights on:
🔹 Soil–plant–atmosphere interactions
🔹 Pre-monsoon heatwave dynamics
🔹 A national-scale S2S agricultural drought forecasting system

The session offered valuable perspectives on land–climate feedbacks and the development of effective early warning systems for climate extremes.

We are delighted to share the latest research publication from our Ph.D. scholar Aishree Boruah from the Department of Climate Change, IIT Hyderabad!

Her new paper, “Well-to-wheel emission of electric vehicles: Influence of driving cycles, grid composition, policies,” has been published in Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment (Elsevier), co-authored along with Dr. Pritha Chatterjee, Dr. Digvijay S. Pawar, and Prashanth Sri P.

The study developed city-specific EV driving cycles using a hybrid MCMC–GA approach and also found that real-world driving cycles increase WTW emissions by 91–129% compared to standard test cycles.

We were delighted to host Dr. TVS Udaya Bhaskar, Scientist-G and Head of the Ocean Data & Information Management Division at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, for an insightful talk on “Ocean Data and Information System of INCOIS – Empowering Ocean Data and Value-Added Services.”

Held at the Department of Civil Engineering, the session provided a deep dive into how integrated ocean data systems and visualization tools support research, climate studies, and marine services. Dr. Bhaskar also shared his expertise on Argo data management, mixed layer variability, and the role of data-driven ocean insights in advancing environmental understanding.

🚨 New Publication Alert on Extreme Events! 🌧️

We are delighted to share that a research paper by our Ph.D. scholar Sree Anusha Ganapathiraju under the guidance of Dr. Maheswaran R, has been published in the Journal of Hydrology! 🎉

The paper, titled “Quantitative assessment of automated threshold selection methods for Generalized Pareto Distribution for modelling precipitation extremes in the Indian Subcontinent,” presents a comprehensive framework for threshold selection in precipitation extremes using the Peak-Over-Threshold (POT) method. This work contributes to enhancing the consistency and objectivity in modelling hydrological and climate extremes - an important step forward for climate risk and extreme event analysis.

🌍 Department of Climate Change Students Lead Climate Resilience Initiative Workshop in IIT Hyderabad 🌍
The Department of Climate Change at IIT Hyderabad successfully conducted the "Youth Foresight Sprint: Investing in Resilient Futures" workshop on August 29, 2025, This landmark initiative, organized in collaboration with the UNDRR, United Nations University - Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU CRIS), and Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), engaged 21 graduate and research students from different disciplines in developing comprehensive national foresight scenarios. The initiative represents a critical advancement in youth-centered climate governance, connecting India's next generation of climate leaders with international frameworks for disaster risk reduction. Ideas generated will contribute to both local adaptation strategies and UNDRR's global youth engagement efforts.
For the Youth, By the Youth
Student facilitators led sessions, participants drove discussions, and young researchers shaped outcomes—demonstrating that youth are not merely beneficiaries of climate policy but essential architects of resilient futures. The workshop's innovative approach combined theoretical knowledge with practical application, enabling the young participants to identify drivers of change, assess cascading impacts, and create strategic resilience investment roadmaps for India's future.

The workshop demonstrates the department’s commitment to participatory climate risk assessment and positions the institution as a leader in university engagement for disaster risk reduction. We are proud to share that our PhD student Toni Regis was invited and represented Department of Climate Change, IIT Hyderabad, at the Future Scenarios Forum 2025 hosted by the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures, University of Leeds, UK. This event brought together experts and leading scientists working on climate future scenarios, policy, and sustainable development.
The forum provided Toni with valuable insights into the progress made in developing climate and sustainability scenarios, while also highlighting the need for stronger integration of socio-health-nature linkages in shaping just and resilient futures.
Toni has also written an insightful article reflecting on his experiences at the conference—covering key discussions on scenario planning, climate governance, and the socio-health-nature nexus in building sustainable futures.

🤝 Welcome to Dr. Hinoguin as part of the AI-RTF Program 🔬

Dr. Allyn Duvin Hinoguin, Associate Professor IV at the College of Marine and Allied Sciences, Mindanao State University at Naawan, Philippines, has started her visit to the department as part of the ASEAN-India Research and Training Fellowship (AI-RTF) program. She is a marine ecologist with more than 15 years of experience. Her research expertise includes fish ecology, mangrove ecology, molecular techniques such as eDNA analysis, and integrated coastal resource management. She obtained her Ph.D. in Fish Ecology from Kochi University, Japan, focusing on the role of subtropical mangroves as fish habitats in the Ryukyu Islands.

Dr. Hinoguin leads and collaborates on several interdisciplinary and government-funded research initiatives. She is the Project Leader of the MAreFiSH Project, which investigates the ecological functionality of mangrove afforestation. She also contributes to the GleanPhil Program, a national research initiative exploring the socio-ecological and economic value of gleaning fisheries. In addition, she is involved in the eDNA-based biodiversity monitoring project—part of a regional research collaboration under the eAsia Joint Research Program, with funding support from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and DOST-PCAARRD.
As part of AI-RTF, she plans to better understand community-level responses of mangrove-associated fish to climate change and contaminant exposure.
