Happy New Year to you! The past year has been a silent one on social media but a very active one at Awake & Shine! We have been firing up all our resources and efforts to grow, expand, build and make deeper connections with ourselves and our people. Some dreams have seen fruition. In our next few posts we'll share details of our journey! For now, posting some pictures of our children, people, activities and land. Lots of love and good wishes to our friends!

It's been a rather long silence from our side! The School, children and teachers are doing well. Our internet connectivity has been substandard for a while. We have a tough time sending and receiving work related emails. Sharing pictures and videos are a complete impossibility with our present internet speed. We hope it gets better and we share news more regularly from our school. For now, some pictures of our children and teachers from Feb 2018, when the new session began.

We have no internet connectivity and lack of communication from our side is also a result of lack of action. Awake and Shine remains closed for the third consecutive month. We are pained at the unrecoverable loss of time in this session due to unresolved political matters. We are working towards curriculum changes that will help us use Dec/ Jan more productively at School.
In the interim, we spend our time meeting teachers and children informally. Keeping them motivated and busy. Some good friends have been sending 'downloaded' articles for us to read and this one in particular resonated with our ideology of philanthropy. Do read it! Philanthropy is not charity, it is justice. It is not noble... it is right and real. Learning about the historical context, recognizing local leadership and having sustained empathetic contact with the people of the area (cultural immersion of sorts) are indispensable tools for dispensing 'just philanthropy'

We need a new framework for giving to address America's economic, social, and political inequalities.

Today it's more important for our children across the world to unite on pressing matters such as our rivers, forests, pollution and ill effects of unabated consumerism than it is for them to know about their skin color, their country of origin, their race or religion. This video by Sadguru is close to our heart and we will share it with our children when the school reopens.
We don't have internet service for the last two months. A lot of reading, writing and watching the clouds and rain has happened. We hope that 29th Aug; people and political leaders come to some concensus and the educational institutions reopen.

It's been a rather long silence from our side. The School has been closed for a month plus because of the Gorkhaland agitation. Teachers and students are safely home, eagerly waiting to return to school. We wish political agitations had a way of achieving what they desired without disrupting educational institutions, healthcare services and other life essential services. For now, we are living days with limited/ no internet service and side by side planning the school schedule for when we resume. We will keep you updated about the school once we have internet service. Hoping to see the agitation simmer down and all other things return to normalcy.
