Today marks a special day, a day of appreciation, a day of reverence, a day of rejoicing, and a day of recognition. Guru Purnima is a special day for all teachers. The festival is observed as the full-moon day of Shravan maas, and is said to be the appearance day of Guru Poornima or the full moon day of Asadh maas, when many sages, including the revered Veda Vyasa, appeared on Earth. It is moreover said that the special Daslakshan period commences today i.e. the base lord of Guru and the lord of Das, Mercury, becomes double-powered. It is thus an ideal day to eat sesame seeds and enjoy shravana month, the month of harvest. A sapling is also planted on this day. Sesame seeds are also eaten in the belief that as the Lord is the base lord of the guru (sage), the sesame seeds, too.
