SUMMARY OF NMC GUIDELINES FOR FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATE DATED 18 NOV 2021
This summary outlines the essential criteria and process for Indian students aiming to practice medicine in India after obtaining a medical degree from abroad.
Indian students seeking to pursue MBBS in foreign countries need to be aware of the National Medical Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Regulations, 2021. Here are the key points:
Regulations Overview: These regulations govern the qualifications and procedures for foreign medical graduates to practice medicine in India.
👉Course Duration: Must complete a medical course of at least 54 months.
👉Internship: Must undergo a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution.
👉Language: The degree must be obtained with English as the medium of instruction.
👉Subjects: Must study mandatory subjects as specified in Schedule-I of NMC Act.
👉A 12-month internship: FMG must undergo a 12-month supervised internship in the same university hospital.
👉Professional Registration: after completion of Internship the foreign medical graduates must be registered with the relevant professional regulatory body in the country where the degree is awarded.
👉Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE): After completion of Degree from abroad the foreign medical graduates needs to Qualify FMGE in India.
👉Internship in India: FMGE must complete a 12-month supervised internship in India.
👉Registration: the foreign medical graduates after completion of all above are granted License to practice as medical practitioner (a doctor) in India.
👉National Exit Test (NExT):
After National Exit Test (NExT) is implemented, Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) will be non existent. (Implementation of Previous Gazette Notification deferred)
After the implementation of National Exit Test (NExT), all the medical graduates whether study MBBS or MBBS equivalent course in India or abroad, will have to qualify as under:
1. Qualify NExT-1: Graduates After completion of Degree from abroad will be required to qualify the National Exit Test Part 1 (NEXT-1). NExT-1 will be score for admission in Post Graduate Degree course after qualifying NExT-2.
2. A 12-month internship in India: Internship in India have to be done in NMC-designated hospitals by all the students whether studying Medicine in India or abroad.
3. Qualify NExT-2: NExT-2 will ensure your license to practice as a medical practitioner in India and only after qualifying NExT-2 you can use your NEXT-1 score for admission to a Post Graduate Degree programme in India.
Exemptions:
👉These regulations do not apply to those who acquired their foreign medical degrees before the regulations came into force or are already pursuing their education abroad.
👉Specific exemptions may be granted by the Commission or Central Government.
Course Criteria:
👉The foreign medical course must be equivalent to the Indian MBBS curriculum.
👉The entire course, including internship, must be completed at the same foreign institution.
👉Completion Time: The foreign medical course must be completed within ten years from the date of seeking admission. After the implementation of National Exit Test (NExT), you may be required to clear everything within 10 years of joining the MBBS course in India or Abroad.
