Happy Engineer’s Day! 🛠️

Today we celebrate the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of India’s greatest engineers, and honour every engineer who turns ideas into reality.

Engineering is not just about machines, code, or blueprints. It is about curiosity that asks “why not,” patience that survives a hundred failed attempts, and the discipline to keep building when the answer isn’t obvious yet.

Behind every bridge, every app, every satellite, and every small invention that makes daily life easier, there is an engineer who chose to solve a problem instead of walking past it.

To every engineer, student, and educator shaping the future one solution at a time, today is yours.

Happy Engineer’s Day!

Some traditions are worth keeping.

At Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar’s 14th Convocation last year, our Director Prof. Rajeev Ahuja became an internet sensation. Students affectionately nicknamed him the “Pookie Professor” after he happily joined them for sunglasses, dabbing, finger-hearts and fist bumps while handing out degrees, a moment that racked up millions of views online.

This year, at the 15th Convocation, the students made sure the tradition lived on. Once again, amid the formality of gowns and degrees, there were smiles, poses and playful moments between the Director and the graduating batch.
For Prof. Ahuja, it has never been about the viral moment itself. As he has said before, convocation is a celebration of years of hard work, and students deserve to enjoy it fully.

Here’s to a Director who reminds us that leadership and warmth can go hand in hand, and to a graduating class that knows how to celebrate.

“My classroom was a railway platform where I once slept because I had nowhere else to go.”

Shri Satyanarayan Nuwal, Founder and Chairman, Solar Industries India Limited and Padma Shri awardee, shared his personal journey at the 15th Convocation of Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, from a school dropout in a small village in Rajasthan to building one of India’s leading defence manufacturing companies.

He spoke candidly about failure, the discipline it takes to stay with one idea, and the decision to move into defence manufacturing when no one thought a private company from Nagpur belonged there. Today, that company’s systems power the BrahMos missile and India’s indigenous defence platforms.

His message to the graduates was simple. Your background does not decide your ceiling. Your persistence does.

“There has never been a better time to graduate in India than right now.”

Shri Adil Zainulbhai, Chairman, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, opened his address at the 15th Convocation with this bold claim, and then made the case for it.

He spoke about India’s growing confidence on the global stage, and reminded graduates that IIT Ropar itself was founded only in 2008, meaning many of them are almost as old as the institution they are graduating from. That, he said, gave them something rare: the instinct to build rather than just inherit.

His message to the Class of 2026 was direct. Stay a learner. Go toward hard problems, not away from them. And don’t wait for permission to do ambitious work.

“Real education is a balanced blend of acquiring knowledge and developing character and values.”

Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, opened the 15th Convocation with these words, welcoming the graduating batch of 2026.

He spoke about the values that define an IIT Ropar education and thanked parents for their support and trust in the Institute. He also reminded students that their degree is not just an academic milestone but a tool to build character and contribute meaningfully to society.

He closed with the Institute’s motto, “धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्” (Deploy our intellect on the right path), urging graduates to carry it forward as they begin a new chapter.
