On 2 April 2022, FinCOM concluded the Data101 course after receiving overwhelming support from over 400 students across various colleges. The course offered an introduction to the different topics under Data Analytics with regular assignments to keep track of the learning progress. It covered topics like python libraries for data science, probability and statistics, Excel, ML for data science, SQL, R and case studies. Along with a good overview of the topics, students also received tips for interview preparation to help them with placements and internships in the field. The enthusiasm showed by the students in attending the sessions, completing the assignments and actively asking queries acted as a morale booster for the entire team of FinCOM and, most importantly, Mr. Ashwin Goyal, who dedicated his time and efforts to provide valuable and engaging content to all the students regularly.

On March 20, FinCOM, IIT Ropar organized a webinar on "Mastering Investing Decisions in the Capital Markets". The guest speaker was Mr. Bikram Gupta, the founder of "MarginValue".

The discussion started with the rules of investing which were followed by the 5 areas that inform investment decision making namely macroeconomics, Financial Accounting, Valuation, Business Analysis, and Behavioral Finance.
Under these sub-headings, we talked about what indicators we should track, how they help us in making better decisions, and also, we learnt to identify red flag situations using income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. Other very important parts covered were the risks involved and the management of emotions during decision-making. Towards the end of the session, a roadmap to big wealth creation was shared and the stage was open for queries by the students.

On 10th March, FinCOM conducted an interactive and educative session by Snizzr Technologies founder and one of our B.Tech. 2019 batch student Mr. Tanishq Vaishnav on the topic ‘Stock Market’.
The session started with a short introduction reflecting on the career opportunities involved in stock market, famous personalities involved in it and the potential it hold in today’s world. The speaker gave brief insights on what are stocks and how can one expand their business with proper knowledge of it followed by introducing terms like IPO, stock exchange, Nifty & Sensex and the market structure. Further in the session, important aspects related to trading, investing, technical analysis (TA) and the different charts involved for better description of it namely the line chart, candle stick chart etc, assumptions in technical analysis, support and resistance, key points in TA were explained.
The session concluded with recommendations for resources and books to learn more about the stock market and some important key points to be remembered and pondered upon before starting trading in stock market.

On February 1, the union budget 2022 was presented in the parliament, and a few days later, on February 21, FinCOM conducted a Panel discussion on the same. The panel comprised of existing and former members of FinCOM, who, with their experience and expertise, shed light on various aspects of the union budget.

The session started with a discussion on Budget FY23 as a vision document for Amrit Kaal and social inclusion. Further, we saw how the budget might prove to be a booster for health and education sectors, followed by topics like Privatization and disinvestment, Public investment, Digital banking, public capital expenditure and PPP. Finally, the panel members presented an overall analysis of the Union Budget 2022, and the stage was open for queries by the students.

Overall, it was a very engaging and informative discussion. We have a lot more amazing sessions in-store and expect the same participation and enthusiasm from your side.

On 9 February, FinCOM organized an interactive session by Mr. Aditya Ghosh on “Financial wellness”.
The session kickstarted with some advice and recommendations on personal financial planning, followed by some brief insights on Active and Passive income sources, investment objectives and a systematic plan to implement them. The speaker discussed the common mistakes people commit while investing in various sectors and provided valuable suggestions along with a few DO’s and DONT’s to avoid these mistakes. Later in the session, the attendees were also introduced to a unique mutual fund calculator that gave a brief idea about the expected returns on investment in a ‘Systematic investment plan’ and ‘One type investment (Lump Sum)’. The session concluded with some important and valuable information on mutual funds and guidance on buying various insurances.

On Feb 6, FinCOM conducted a guest session by team of The Number Monkey.
The session covered the roadmap for getting into the various careers in finance.
We explored the various roles in IB, Consulting and VC/PE, discussing the specialization and recruitment procedure of the major firms in each domain.
The session concluded with a discussion on how to choose the right domain and how to build the required skillset for it.

The Data101 course is off to a splendid start, and we are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm shown by the students. With over 400 students attending the sessions regularly, we are confident that each of you will have a lot to take from this course. The first two sessions covered the introduction to data science and the basics of python. The upcoming sessions will cover more topics related to data science, such as statistics and probability. We hope you enjoy this course just as much as we enjoy bringing it to you.

We are very grateful for the enthusiasm that everyone showed for enrolling in this course. The forms have been closed now, and we will be moving forward with this course with over 700 students. The first session will be conducted on 28 January 2022. As we kickstart this course, we would once again like to thank everyone for showing such interest, and we hope this course helps everyone gain new insights and knowledge that helps them in their careers.
