STATUS OF ELEPHANTS IN INDIA"
Report titled "Status of Elephants in India" was released on October 13, 2025, by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII). This was India's first DNA-based elephant census, which estimated a nationwide population of 22,446 elephants.
The census utilized a DNA-based method to identify individual elephants through genetic markers.
The report identified four major regions for the elephant population.
The Western Ghats had the highest population with 11,934 elephants.
The North-Eastern Hills and Brahmaputra flood plains followed with 6,559 elephants.
