IIT Roorkee and Avathon have announced plans to establish the Avathon Physical AI Lab (Avathon PAL) in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Roorkee.

The proposed research lab will focus on advancing Physical AI, autonomous systems and intelligent technologies for industrial applications, combining IIT Roorkee’s research expertise with Avathon’s experience in industrial autonomy.

Led by Prof. Sugata Gangopadhyay, Principal Investigator, Avathon PAL, the initiative will foster collaborative research, doctoral fellowships, student internships, workshops and industry engagement.

The lab will work in close collaboration with Avathon’s AI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, connecting academic research with real-world applications across mining, energy, manufacturing, logistics and aerospace.

Pervinder Johar, CEO, Avathon and IIT Roorkee alumnus, is supporting the initiative to build a strong ecosystem for Physical AI research and industrial innovation in India.

Strengthening Industry–Academia Collaboration

Senior officials from BHEL visited ICARS, IIT Roorkee, Greater Noida Campus on 19 August 2026 to explore opportunities for collaboration in training, capacity building and knowledge partnership.

Discussions focused on Occupational Safety, Health & Environment (OSHE), Material Handling, ESG, Decarbonization, Carbon Offset, and joint training programmes.

The collaboration aims to strengthen industry capabilities while leveraging IIT Roorkee’s academic and research expertise towards a safer and more sustainable future.

Uttarakhand NEP Conclave 2026 | IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee is pleased to host the Uttarakhand NEP Conclave 2026 on 22 August 2026, bringing together the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Uttarakhand, Vice-Chancellors and other leaders in higher education from across the state.

The Conclave will focus on translating the vision of NEP 2020 into concrete institutional action -strengthening interdisciplinary education, research and innovation, institutional mentoring, industry linkages, faculty capacity building, internationalization and technology-enabled higher education.

The Conclave will culminate in institutional commitments and a collaborative roadmap for the way forward, reinforcing IIT Roorkee’s role as a knowledge, mentoring and capability-building partner for Uttarakhand’s higher education ecosystem.

From Innovation to Mission Readiness 🇮🇳

A proud moment for iHUB DivyaSampark, IIT Roorkee!

On 14 August 2026, General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Indian Army, inaugurated AASHVAST — Assessment and Analysis of Electronic Systems Hardware for Vulnerabilities and Security Threats — along with the Wireless & Security Anti-Drone Laboratory at DGEME Headquarters, Delhi Cantt.

A major initiative of iHUB DivyaSampark, IIT Roorkee, these state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the security, cyber resilience, and operational readiness of critical defence systems while strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities.

The occasion was graced by Prof. K.K. Pant, Director IIT Roorkee; Mr. Manish Anand, CEO, iHUB DivyaSampark; Prof. Sudeb Dasgupta, Project Director; and Wg Cdr M.S. Mathew,(Retd.) Advisor, iHUB DivyaSampark, along with senior Army leadership and key stakeholders.

Aligned with the vision of , iHUB DivyaSampark, IIT Roorkee continues to transform innovation into secure, technologically advanced, mission-ready solutions for national security.

IIT Roorkee, under the BIS Chair at IIT Roorkee and in association with the Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi, organised a workshop on the National Building Construction Standard (NBCS 2026), bringing together experts, academia and professionals to strengthen awareness and effective implementation of national standards for safe, resilient and quality-oriented construction.

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, was the Chief Guest, while Shri Sanjay Pant, Deputy Director General (Standardization), BIS, New Delhi, presided over the inaugural session. Prof. Deepak Khare, BIS Chair Professor at IIT Roorkee, highlighted the importance of engaging students and academia with Indian Standards.

The programme featured technical sessions by Shri Abhishek Pal, Shri Sandeep Goel and Shri Deepak Aggarwal, along with an open-house interaction on key aspects of NBCS 2026, including fire and life safety, standardization and the role of academia.

As part of the initiative to promote wider engagement with NBCS 2026, a quiz on the National Building Construction Standard (NBCS 2026) on August 17, 2026, the winners were also awarded during the function.
The initiative reflects IIT Roorkee’s commitment to contributing its multidisciplinary expertise towards strengthening safe, resilient and sustainable infrastructure and supporting the effective adoption of national standards.

Dr Ekta Singh, a Postdoctoral Fellow under the supervision of Prof. Pradeep Srivastava in the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Roorkee, is working on Himalayan Geoarchaeology and heritage, reading the Himalayas as a record of human migration.

In her TEDx lecture, she talks through her fieldwork in the Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, drawing on rock art, archaeological material, traces below the surface and ancient DNA. All these threads of evidence point to travel over the trans-Himalayan region thousands of years ago.

We are pleased to share that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) and the United Nations University – Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS), Brugge, Belgium has been signed for collaboration.
The MoU was exchanged between Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee and Dr. Philippe De Lombaerde, Director, UNU-CRIS. Prof. Vivek Malik (Dean SRIC), Prof. Karun Rawat (Dean International Relations), Prof. Akshay Dvivedi (Head, Dept of Mechanical Engineering), Prof. Anil K. Gupta (Professor IIT Roorkee and PI - ICARS). Prof. Mohit Mohanty, from IIT Roorkee, and Prof. Nidhi Nagabhatala (HoD, UNU-CRIS) were present and exchanged views during the occasion.

This strategic partnership aims to strengthen collaboration in key areas including climate change adaptation, disaster resilience, sustainability, public health, and regional cooperation through joint research, capacity-building initiatives, international workshops, conferences, policy dialogues, academic exchanges, and collaborative publications.

A significant immediate outcome of this partnership is the proposed Sponsored International Training Programme/Workshop in December 2026, which will bring together experts, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to advance knowledge and capacity on climate resilience and sustainable development. This collaboration reflects IIT Roorkee’s commitment to fostering meaningful global partnerships that support evidence-based research, capacity development, and practical solutions for climate and disaster-related challenges.

We look forward to a productive and impactful journey ahead with UNU-CRIS.
