Department of Water Resources Development and Management, IIT Roorkee, organized a farmer awareness program under the project entitled “Improving irrigation efficiency through on-farm water management” funded by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, on 15-03-2023 at Nagla Aimed village, of Narsan block Haridwar. Around 150 farmers were present at the event.
During the inaugural session, project in-charge Prof. Ashish Pandey explained the utility of micro-irrigation methods, scientific irrigation scheduling and on-farm management to increase farm production and water productivity. The co-PI of the project, Prof. SK Mishra, highlighted the importance of irrigating as per the water requirement of crops throughout the crop growth cycle.
Commissioner Anuj Kanwal, the chief guest of the program, Command Area Development and Water Management and Water Use Efficiency Bureau (CADWM & BWUE), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, said in his address that farmers need to be aware today so that water can be managed and saved. Another guest of the program, Member Secretary of the Indian National Committee on Climate Change (INCCC), Dr. R. P. Pandey talked about the history and management of the Ganga Canal.
Mr. Sandeep Chaurasia (Research Scholar) who is working on the project, reported that 40% of irrigation water could be saved with the use of drip irrigation in sugarcane fields. Mr. Dhananjay Paswan (Research Scholar) advised the farmers to develop a drainage network to pass excess water during the rainy season and not to plant poplar trees within 1m from the watercourse as it damages the watercourses.
