Robustness: let’s make some health with Indian classical music

I have heard many reasons that why people don’t listen to Indian classical music, some of the common ones are making them feeling sleepy and boring. Well I think they perhaps are not familiar with its effects which are just opposite of feeling sleepy.

Now surely you must be wondering that what kind of music falls under classical music. Those who have been in classical music they must have the answer but those who aren’t familiar they might have a thought of some old and slow music. Isn’t it? Well, it’s not entirely wrong because Indian classical music came from the Vedic literature which had two foundational elements ‘raga’ and ‘tala’.

Since Indian music is from ancient text of Hinduism, so it is true that it can sometimes difficult to understand without language knowledge and skills to follow its strict rules and standards but the term boring is not quite justified because technical abilities in classical musicians makes them musically versatile. Many of the famous classical artists like singer “Rahat fateh ali khan” and “Kalish Kher, Tabla player zakhir Hussain are setting an example to show incredible Indian classical music in its peak.

You will be surprised of knowing how much Indian classical music is beneficial for our health in our daily life. Its own standard, rule and order are actually very good for our brain. Let’s have a look to the benefits of listening classical music. Indeed, take a look to healthy music.

1. Prevents Depressions: As we all know about the present scenario of our society which is manufacturing depressed people. Many of us are suffering with dull life somewhat robotic life. We often become visionless and passionless and literally devoid deeper meaning and purpose of our life. Over 5 crore of Indians are suffering from depression has said by WHO in 2015. Music gives positive effect to emotion and mood. The listener’s counterpart to Indian music is ‘Rasa’, the mental and emotional reflection implicit by the seven notes. The reaction to the music is based on both primary effect of the notes and their arrangement and the secondary effects of thought and emotion evoked by the notes. Indian classical has calming effect which may give positive effect and development to the present working youth.

2. Gives Oxytocin boost: oxytocin is a hormone released by pituitary gland affiliated with breast feeding and s*xual contact and also known for increasing bonding and trust between people. Females usually have the higher level than males. Oxytocin released during s*x, childbirth and lactation to aid reproductive functions. It has physical and psychological effects, including influencing social behavior and emotion. Oxytocin injections are sometimes given to start birth contraction during labor which may affect a rapid heartbeat and unusual bleeding. In a study with humans, 30 minutes of selected ‘soothing’ music have asked to listen to the patients of coronary bypass surgery. Later they found that who’d listened to music had higher level of serum oxytocin compared to others who were assigned to bed rest. Perhaps, this explain why mothers sing to their babies: it may help to encourage bonding through oxytocin release. It is suggested by many researchers that music directly impact to oxytocin level which affect our ability to trust and act generously toward others.

3. Encourage for physical fitness: Handful of musical tracks is offered to enhance the practice of Yoga now days. Music has a strong effect on emotions, mental state and memory. Music is helping when rhythm matches with the breathing practice through asnas. Yoga in combination with classical music produces a magnified soothing effect. Interestingly 3 out 4 people like to practice yoga with music on crafted and selected their own playlist at home. Most of the practitioners stated to get enthusiastic and more energetic during practices with music. It also motivated them to double the time of practice unintentionally.

4. Natural memory booster: “Music is the medicine of the mind” said ‘John A Logan’. Some studies have shown that students who listen to classical music, their ability to memorize the subject is better than who do not. Even if you stuck with your jobs and need a memory booster to overcome with your burden classical music is a great option to refine yourself. Sometimes memories of our past experiences also recalled by listening to music and are called ‘Flashbulb memory’. Musical notes (swara) aids to trigger the brain cells and neurons, which are responsible for the development of sharp memory.

5. Immediate effect on attention and concentration: Music has meaning and music needs a mind to appreciate it for its auditory communication of melodies. Yes, it is true that it needs an appreciative mind to relate music with its effectiveness; otherwise what music is for one person could be a noise to another. The tremendous ability of Indian music is to engage much of our brain in coordinating with the wide range of a melodic framework. 60 beats per minute pattern of classical music helps to simultaneously stimulate left and the right hemisphere of the brain, resulting in improve concentration and attention. It helps to keep focused.

6. Music in the womb: I have seen my father chanting mantras every day. Surprisingly one day I accompanied my father and chanting the same thing without any difficulty as such. This is my own experience where I have seen myself learning without my prior knowledge. All I know is those mantras were in a proper rhythm and tone. Similarly an unborn child can also hear and respond to sound in the womb. The baby can be cultured, especially through certain mantras and music in Indian tradition, says Dr. Tambe; a famous Ayurveda Physician. Soothing tunes, chant mantras rendered in traditional raga will stimulate baby’s brain development as well as hearing senses. After child birth the music serves to calm the child. Babies find it enjoyable as they already use to it and it will help them to sleep comfortably. Music therapy is also use in a case of hyper active children to gain their attention and make them sit quietly.

An Abstract on the effect of raga music 👩‍🎓

Music is widely accepted to produce changes in effective states to the listener. Being a musician I got motivated when I experience the constantly undergoing changes in my mind during music listening and singing. However, the exact nature of the emotional responses and its effectiveness is an open question; therefore there is a need for further refinement and exploration of neural correlates and emotional responses to judge the actual effectiveness in different parts of brain and mind induced by music. Indian music has great potential in the relationship of its absence and presence into our mind. In Indian classical music a Raga has different notes (swar) which are having their own distinct psychological effects or emotions and which are also related specifically to a color, mood, chakra and time of day. The human body consist 72000 nerves which vibrate in a specific rhythmic pattern. Disturbance in their rhythmic vibration is the root cause of disease. The musical notes of a raga restore their normal rhythm by its effective vibration intensity, thereby bringing about good health. Therefore Raga music seems to be capable to provide new insights into response of human behavior
