Bharat Ratna is the highest award a non-military person can receive in India in recognition of their exceptional service/performance in any field of human endeavour. The Prime Minister of India himself makes the recommendations for the award to the President, and in a year, a maximum of three persons are eligible for this award. A Bharat Ratna awardee receives a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a peepal leaf-shaped medallion.
