Remembering Zubeen Garg — A Voice That Became the Soul of Assam

On 19th September 2026, Saturday SERS Public School came together to remember and pay heartfelt tribute to the legendary Zubeen Garg, whose voice, music and spirit became an inseparable part of Assam’s cultural identity.

To mark this solemn day , a commemorative programme was organised at the School premises in the presence of our Principal, Managing Director Sir Mr. Prakash Sarma, Coordinator, and all the teachers and members of the school fraternity.

The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by floral tributes offered in loving memory of Zubeen Garg. The welcome address by the School Coordinator set the tone for an occasion filled with remembrance, gratitude and emotion.

The teachers of SERS Public School remembered Zubeen Garg in their own heartfelt ways through songs, poems, personal reflections and memories. Some shared stories and moments from his extraordinary life, reminding us that behind the celebrated artist was a human being who remained deeply connected to his roots and his people.

A particularly heartfelt moment of the programme was the address by our honorable Managing Director Mr. Prakash Sarma sir who spoke about Zubeen Garg’s life and journey, bringing to light several lesser-known aspects of his life and personality. His words reminded everyone that Zubeen Garg "s legacy cannot be measured merely by the number of songs he sang or the awards he received.

The programme concluded on a deeply emotional and soulful note. Everyone present joined together in singing “Mayabini Ratir Bukut,” creating a moment of collective remembrance and affection. As the familiar melody filled the gathering, it felt as though the entire room was singing not merely a song, but a farewell, a memory and a heartfelt expression of how deeply Zubeen Garg continues to live in our hearts.

🎵 A journey beyond music

Born in Tura, Meghalaya, in 1972, Zubeen Garg began his musical journey at a very young age. His Assamese debut album Anamika in 1992 marked the beginning of a career that would span more than three decades. He went on to become a singer, composer, lyricist, musician, actor and filmmaker, working across numerous languages and musical traditions.

His journey was remarkable because he never allowed success to distance him from his roots. From Assamese folk traditions and Bihu to contemporary music and Bollywood, he carried the sound and spirit of the Northeast far beyond its geographical boundaries.

His national breakthrough came with “Ya Ali” from Gangster: A Love Story, while his work continued to receive recognition in Indian cinema and music.

But perhaps the greatest lesson of Zubeen Garg’s life lies beyond his achievements.

He dared to follow his passion.
He remained connected to his roots.
He created without being confined by boundaries.
And he used his voice not merely to entertain, but to become a part of people's lives.

His story reminds us that true success is not simply about becoming famous. It is about creating something that remains meaningful to people even after we are gone.

Zubeen Garg left this world on 19 September 2025, but his voice did not leave with him. His songs continue to live in our homes, memories, celebrations, struggles and dreams. His music continues to connect generations and remind us of the richness of our own culture.

As educators, we hope that the younger generation will not remember Zubeen Da only as a legendary singer, but also as an example of passion, courage, creativity, perseverance and love for one's roots.

Today, we bow our heads in respect to a man whose voice became a part of Assam's identity.

The voice may have fallen silent,
but the music remains.
The man may have left us,
but the memories remain.
And as long as his songs are heard,
Zubeen Garg will continue to live among us.

We remember. We honour. We miss.

Zubeen Garg (1972–2025)
Forever in our hearts. Forever in our songs. Forever a part of Assam.

With deepest respect and love
SERS Public School family.
