100th RAMSAR SITE of INDIA:
Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (also known as Surha Tal) located in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh is India's 100th Ramsar site. This freshwater wetland is situated in the Ganga River basin and was officially designated as a Wetland of International Importance on World Environment Day (June 5, 2026). Originally formed from a meander of the Ganga River, resulting in a freshwater wetland comprised of floodplains and seasonally flooded marshes.It serves as a crucial refuge for waterbirds during the summer months when smaller wetlands dry up.Avian Life: The sanctuary supports vulnerable and diverse waterfowl species such as the common pochard and the Indian river tern.With the addition of Surha Tal, Uttar Pradesh maintains the highest number of Ramsar sites in the country (13 sites). This milestone also makes India the country with the third-highest number of Ramsar sites globally.
