Our Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Features on Doordarshan’s ‘Kanoon Ki Baat

We are pleased to share that Prof. (Dr.) Ashok R. Patil, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, was featured on Doordarshan’s popular programme Kanoon Ki Baat’, where he shared his valuable insights on Consumer Law and Consumer Rights.

During the interaction, Prof. Patil addressed important aspects of consumer awareness, protection of consumer rights, effective enforcement mechanisms, and emerging challenges faced by consumers in today’s evolving marketplace.

The Bird's Eye and the Blind Spot: What Ails India's Consumer Commissions - Ranchi Pioneer 21/08/2026

We are pleased to share that our Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok R. Patil, along with NUSRL student Adhiraj Sehgal, has co-authored a thought-provoking opinion editorial in Ranchi Pioneer on the pressing challenges confronting India’s Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions.

Titled “The Bird’s Eye and the Blind Spot: What Ails India’s Consumer Commissions,” the article examines the growing pendency of consumer cases, with 5,74,333 cases pending nationwide as of January 2026, and explores the deeper institutional and procedural issues affecting the delivery of speedy consumer justice.

The article highlights why addressing pendency requires more than structural reforms it calls for meaningful institutional and procedural changes to strengthen the consumer justice system.

We are delighted to share the remarkable achievement of 𝐆𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐯 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐡𝐚𝐦 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐯, students of the 7th Semester, B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), NUSRL, Ranchi.

The duo jointly authored and presented a research paper titled 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐰𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡: 𝐀 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐋𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐢 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐚, 𝐃𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐫 at the Hara Bhara Swaraj – Rise & Act National Competition, organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Study Circle (RGSC) and Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF).

The competition received 448 registrations from institutions across 70 universities in 21 States and Union Territories. After multiple rounds of selection, 30 students were shortlisted for the final presentation round.

In the national-level presentation held today, Gaurav Kumar Mandal and Subham Sourav secured 4th position overall earning a 5,000 cash prize in recognition of their outstanding work.

The programme was also graced by several distinguished dignitaries from across the nation, including Shri Rahul Gandhi

The Centre for Policies, Laws and Agenda (CPLAN), NUSRL Ranchi, successfully organised the 𝐂𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐍 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟓 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, exclusively for the Batch of 2031.

The debate centred on the theme 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲, 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐁𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟒𝟕, providing freshers with a platform to engage critically with contemporary policy issues and showcase their analytical thinking, articulation and debating skills.

The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, celebrated the 𝟖𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm.

The celebration began with the 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭, 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐣 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐉𝐡𝐚, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫, 𝟔𝟏 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐞, followed by a plantation drive and a special programme at the Plenary Hall.

Addressing the students, 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐣 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐉𝐡𝐚 emphasised that 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, in his address, highlighted NUSRL’s commitment to 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, encouraging students to use the power of law to serve society and strengthen democracy.

We are delighted to celebrate the achievement of Ambika Kachhap, IX Semester student of NUSRL, who participated in the prestigious 42nd Ranchi District Yoga Championship 2026, held at G.D. Goenka School, Namkom, Ranchi, on 11–12 July 2026, and secured 6th Position in the 21–25 years age category.

Her exceptional performance earned her selection to represent Ranchi District and NUSRL at the 26th Jharkhand State Yogasana Sports Championship 2026, held in Chaibasa on 8–9 August 2026.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ashok R. Patil, congratulates Ambika on this outstanding achievement and wishes her continued success in the future.

We are delighted to share that Annee Arsh, Palak Yadav, and Samayita Ghosh, students of 2nd Year, 3rd Semester, emerged as Semi-Finalists at the prestigious National Techno India University Moot Court Competition, Kolkata.

Competing against 75 teams from across India, our team secured an impressive 2nd rank in the Preliminary Round, where only 8 teams were selected to advance further.

successfully qualified for the Quarter-Finals and went on to secure a place among the Top 4 teams, finishing as Semi-Finalists with an overall 4th position in the Semi-Final round. This achievement is a testament to our hard work, teamwork, and dedication to the field of law. Proud to represent our institution at such a prestigious national platform!

On 5th August 2026, the Chair on Consumer Research and Policy, NUSRL Ranchi hosted Dr. Rabindra Kumar Pathak for an insightful session on Statutory Interpretation & Jurisprudential Approaches.

Key highlights:
Literal vs. Purposive Interpretation
Golden Rule, Mischief Rule & internal/external aids
Consumer Protection Act, 2019 as a welfare-oriented model
Landmark precedents & constitutional provisions (Art. 32, Art. 141)

A rich, thought-provoking session that deepened students' understanding of how courts interpret law to protect consumer rights.

Patil, was featured on the panel of "Checks and Balances," a special episode by Governance Now, alongside eminent voices in India's consumer rights movement Mr. Pradeep Mehta (CUTS International), Mr. Ashim Sanyal (Consumer Voice), and Mr. Faisal Farooqui (MouthShut.com).

In the discussion titled "Consumer Justice at a Crossroads," Prof. Patil spoke on the transformative role of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) in shifting India's approach from reactive dispute resolution to preventive regulation. He also highlighted how digital platforms like e-Daakhil are expanding access to justice, and made a strong case for greater use of mediation to ease the burden on consumer commissions.
