Acting altruistically could improve your health. In a recent study, researchers split high school students into two groups: one that volunteered with children and another that did no volunteer work. After 10 weeks, teens who volunteered had lower cholesterol and inflammation levels while teens who didn’t volunteer experienced no change. It didn’t make a difference whether the the volunteer activity involved was sedentary or active, but the teens who reported the biggest increase in empathetic and altruistic behavior after volunteering also experienced the biggest health benefits. Physical exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety in both animal and human research, though logically, it shouldn’t. When you exercise, excitable neurons are created in your brain, especially in the hippocampus, an area of your brain involved in thinking and emotional responses. All these new, excitable neurons should create the ideal environment for anxiety, not calm. New animal research from Princeton University could shed light on this contradiction. Scientists found that the brains of mice who were allowed to run on a wheel showed not only an increase in excitable neurons, but also neurons specifically designed to release the neurotransmitter GABA, which can quiet other activity in the brain. When put under mild stress the extra boost of GABA helped mice who exercised recover more quickly than their sedentary peers. What do you think? Let us know if you feel calmer after a workout in the comments, and share this post with friends.
