In this video, our enthusiastic students are showcasing a fundamental chemistry and physics concept by demonstrating how to separate insoluble impurities from water. Through step-by-step processes like sedimentation, decantation, and filtration using a funnel and filter paper, they clearly explain how water purification works in a practical lab setting.
How It Works:
β1. Mixing : First, soil or sand is added to water to create a mixture where the impurities do not dissolve, demonstrating an insoluble mixture.
β2. Sedimentation : The mixture is left undisturbed for a short while, allowing the heavier solid particles (sand/soil) to settle down at the bottom of the beaker due to gravity.
β3. Decantation: Once the heavier particles settle, the upper layer of slightly clearer liquid is carefully poured out into another container without disturbing the settled dirt.
β4. Filtration : Finally, the liquid is passed through a funnel lined with filter paper. The fine particles that did not settle are trapped by the filter paper, allowing clean liquid to pass through into the flask.
