•• Remembering Legendary Hindustani Classical Vocalist, Composer and Guru Vidushi Veena Sahasrabuddhe on her 6th Death Anniversary (29 June 2016) ••
Vidushi Veena Sahasrabuddhe (14 September 1948 - 29 June 2016) was a prominent Indian Classical and Semi-Classical Vocalist and composer of Hindustani Classical Music. Though her singing style reflects Jaipur and Kirana Gharanas, it finds it roots in Gwalior Gharana. Veena was known as an accomplished singer of Khyal and at the same time of the Bhajans.
• Musical career :
Veena Sahasrabuddhe was born in a musical family to father Shankar Shripad Bodas, who was a disciple of famous vocalist and musicologist Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. She began her early musical education under her father, and then under her brother Kashinath Shankar Bodas. She also learned Kathak Classical dance form in her childhood.
Veena's musical mentors include Padmashri Balwantrai Bhatt, Pandit Vasant Thakar, and Pandit Gajananrao Joshi.
She has a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance, Sanskrit Literature, and English Literature from Kanpur University(1968), a Master's degree (Sangeet Alankar) in Vocal Performance from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal(1969) and also Master's degree in Sanskrit from Kanpur University (1979). A.B.G.M.V. Mandal conferred on her a doctorate in Vocal Music (Sangeet Praveen) in 1988. She was the Head of the Department of Music at SNDT Pune campus.
Veena has given musical performances in and across India. She has toured in the foreign countries like Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

• Death : Veena Sahasrabuddhe passed on 29 June 2016 at her home in Aundh, Pune, due to prolonged illness. She is survived by her husband Dr. Hari Sahasrabuddhe, a son and a daughter.

•• Today is 68th Birthday of Legendary Tabla Maestro Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (30 May 1954) ••
Join us wishing him on his Birthday today. A short highlight on his musical career and achievements ;
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (born 30 May 1954) is recognized as one of India's most eminent Tabla players. He was inspired to take up Tabla by his uncle, the Sitar player Pandit Biswanath Chatterjee, when he was just 4 years old. At 5 he was All India Radio's youngest artist. At 6 Pt. Anindo became a disciple of Padmabhushan Gnan Prakash Ghosh and studied with him for well over 30 years, some of which ran simultaneously with his extensive international concert career. Gnan Prakash Ghosh was well known for his extensive knowledge of all Tabla gharanas, as well as his own Farukhabad gharana furthering this Pt. Anindo also studied the Lucknow Tabla gharana with Ustad Ahfaq Hussain Khan.
Pt. Anindo has a seemingly endless list of achievments:
In 1990 he became the first Tabla player to perform in the House of Commons. In 2003 the President of India crowned him with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award. The All India Critics Association adjudged him as the ‘Best Performer of the Year 1997’ and at the tender age of 16, The Government of India recognized his prodigious talent by awarding him the ‘gold medal’ in the All India Radio Music Competition.
Pt. Anindo has carved out a niche for himself for his Tabla solos for which he is one of the most popular and in-demand performers. He has achieved the most aesthetically satisfying combination of tradition and innovation. As an accompanist, he is known for his sense of balance and proportion, crisp tonal quality, modulation of sound production and rapport with soloists.
Pt. Anindo has accompanied all of the top musicians and has toured with them all over the world. Pt. Anindo enjoyed a long international touring career with Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. His ability to seamlessly blend in with the musician he is accompanying has brought him to share the stage with Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, and Pandit Shivkumar Sharma to name only those who are the pillars on which Indian Classical Music today rests.
Pt. Anindo’s ability to weave the most intricate textures with Tabla bols and to remain uncompromising with crispness and clarity at virtually and speed has seen him adding new dimensions to his instrument. He is a trendsetter for many generations to follow.

•• Remembering Eminent Hindustani Classical Vocalist Gaana Bhaskar Pandit Madhav Gudi on his 11th Death Anniversary ••
Pandit Madhav Gudi (23 December 1941 - 22 April 2011) was a legendary Hindustani Classical Vocalist specialising in Khayal and light forms and a disciple of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi.
Pandit Madhav Gudi hails from the illustrious north Karnataka city of Dharwad, which has produced such distinguished stalwarts as Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur, Pta. Gangubai Hangal, and Pt. Basavraj Rajguru.
Born into a family of keertankars and harikatha(devotional) musicians, Madhav Gudi was introduced to music at a very early age. His rich and sonorous voice encouraged his father to train the young Madhav under Pt. Basavraj Rajguru, the great maestro from whom Pt. Gudi received his formal initiation into Hindustani classical music.
After a few years went by the timbre of Madhav Gudi's voice had begun to resemble that of the eminent exponent of the Kirana Gharana, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. Pt. Rajguru recognized this and recommended him to Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, who took Madhav Gudi under his guidance and bestowed upon him the glorious tradition of his music. Thus began a new chapter in Pt. Gudi's life. Here, in a true guru-shishya milieu which lasted well over twenty-five years, Pt. Madhav Gudi, the musician and performer was sculpted.
Known for his melodious yet powerful voice impeccably suited for Hindustani classical as well as light classical (dasavani and abhang) music, Pt. Madhav Gudi possesses an unparalleled collection of many different styles of compositions in many different languages. A top-grade All India Radio artiste, Pt. Madhav Gudi has toured extensively all over India and has performed with Pt. Bhimsen Joshi in several different centers in India and overseas. Among several accolades that he has received is the prestigious Sangeeta Nritya Akademi award from the government of Karnataka, Surashri, GaanaBhaskar, Smt. Vatsala Tai Joshi Award by the hands of Legendary Dr. Prabha Atre, Gaana Kala Tilaka and the Yashavant Rao Chauhan Samata Gaurav Puraskar.

•• Remembering Eminent Hindustani Classical and Semi-Classical Vocalist Vidushi Sipra Bose on her 14th Death Anniversary (22 April 2008) ••
Vidushi Sipra Bose (9 November 1945 – 22 April 2008) was a noted singer in the Hindustani Classical Music tradition from Kolkata, India.
Sipra bose, an outstanding artist of rare quality is a celebrated figure in North Indian classical as well as in light classical music. Her career in music began in her early teens under the guidance of the Late Sangeetacharya Chinmoy Lahiri.
Sipra Bose has always upheld the traditional intricacies of khayal from the renowned Lucknow gharana - a rich musical heritage that has been handed down to her from her guru in a system known as the Guru Shishya Parampara.
Sipra specialized in learning Thumri and Ghazal under the inimitable peerless of Lucknow, the legendary Begum Akhtar from whom she developed Dadra and other light classical varieties as well. In addition, for rare traditional compositions like Chaiti, Kajri, Thumri, Dadra and Tappa, Sipra's talim continued under Naina Devi of the Benaras gharana.
For pure classical music, Sipra received training under the guidance of Pandit Ravi Shankar, a legendary figure in the world of Indian Classical as well as world music.
Sipra Bose's captivating voice with its' intricate delicacies, her controlled eloquence, the lyrical grace makes each performance not just memorable but truly magical. Her enunciation of Urdu, enriched by her spontaneous expression has put her in a niche amongst the most established Ghazal performers of today.
Gobindo Bose, her husband, the noted Tabla player, has always been a source of inspiration for her. Though they seldom perform together on stage, their mutual admiration for one another, the mastery of their art has proved to be an unique combination, especially during a live performance. This recording is a fine example of such a relationship.

•• Remembering Eminent Tabla Tarang Maestro and Composer Pandit Kamalesh Maitra on his 17th Death Anniversary (22 April 2005) ••
Pandit Kamalesh Maitra (28 April 1928 – 22 April 2005) was an Indian classical musician, composer and teacher. He is recognised as the last master of the Tabla Tarang – a melodic percussion instrument consisting of numerous individually tuned hand drums, set in a semicircle. Maitra grew up in Calcutta and played the tabla until joining Uday Shankar's ballet company in 1950 and taking up the Tabla tarang. He became the company's musical director and toured internationally with the troupe through to the mid 1970s.
Along with Ustad Alla Rakha, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and others, Maitra was among the musicians that Pandit Ravi Shankar selected for his Music Festival from India r***e in 1974. He then accompanied Shankar on ex-Beatle George Harrison's North American tour that year – a venture that led to him performing with American jazz musicians Emil Richards and Tom Scott. Maitra settled in Berlin in 1977, where he performed and worked as a music teacher. In 1980, he formed the Ragatala Ensemble, an orchestra that fused elements of Indian and European classical music with jazz and other Western genres. Among his recordings, Tabla Tarang – Melody on Drums (1996) has received critical acclaim, one reviewer describing it as a "milestone" in world music. Maitra developed strong cultural ties with Berlin and continued to live and work in Germany until his death in 2005.
