Plot twist in astronomy! 🪐👇🏻

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has made a potentially groundbreaking discovery by detecting chemical signatures in the atmosphere of the exoplanet K2-18b, located 124 light-years away.

The molecules—dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS)—are particularly intriguing because, on Earth, they are produced almost exclusively by microbial life, such as marine phytoplankton. While these findings offer some of the most compelling signs yet of possible extraterrestrial biology, scientists emphasize the need for caution and further validation.

K2-18b is classified as a Hycean planet—a world with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and possibly a global ocean beneath it. It is about 8.6 times the mass of Earth and orbits within the habitable zone of a cool dwarf star, where conditions could allow for the presence of liquid water. Previous JWST observations had already identified methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere, consistent with an environment that might support life.

The detection of DMS and DMDS reached a three-sigma confidence level, meaning there’s a 0.3% chance the signal is due to random noise. However, the gold standard for scientific discovery is five-sigma, or a 0.00006% chance, so more data is needed to confirm these results. Follow-up JWST observations totaling 16–24 hours are planned to improve precision and distinguish between the two molecules. Additionally, laboratory studies will explore whether non-biological processes could also generate these compounds under K2-18b’s specific atmospheric conditions.

Though this doesn’t confirm life, the findings are highly significant. The planet’s warm ocean and atmospheric makeup resemble the early Earth, making it a prime candidate in the search for life. As lead researcher Nikku Madhusudhan of the University of Cambridge cautioned, “It’s in no one’s interest to prematurely claim we’ve detected life. This is a groundbreaking step, but we need more data to confirm these signals.”

Whether the signals come from biology or unknown chemistry, K2-18b is rapidly becoming a landmark world in astrobiology.

The students of the Department of Physics at Dr. Meghnad Saha College have emerged victorious in the science mela group event at the Uttar Dinajpur District Yuva Utsav-2024. Held at Sri Agrasen Mahavidyalya in Dalkhola, the event was organized by NYKS Uttar Dinajpur in collaboration with NSS Sri Agrasen Mahavidyalya.

Our students' tireless efforts and hard work have truly paid off, and we couldn't be prouder! Their achievement will undoubtedly inspire many young students to strive for excellence. As winners, our students will now represent our college at the State Level Meet.

A one day special lecture on the topic: Science in Colonial Bengal and Contribution of Meghnad Saha was held on 30-11-2023. The event was organised by The Department of Physics and Department of History in association with IQAC, Dr. Meghnad Saha College.Former Scientist and eminent speaker Dr. S K Bhadra illustrated the situation of practice of science in ancient India with a beautiful and fascinating Powerpoint presentation. He discussed the evolution of science in West Bengal during the pre-independence era. He emphasized the contribution of Dr. Meghnad Saha in this regard.His entire presentation was well structured and thoughtful.The students and others teachers present there enjoyed the talk.There were many interesting anecdotes in his talk which make the talk extremely charming and interesting.The overall experience was immensely satisfying.As Mr. Jaygopal Biswas, Bursar, said "We may have to wait for a lifetime to have such kind of discussion again".

মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের হার্ভার্ড এবং ইসরাইলের তেল অভিভ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বিজ্ঞানীদের যৌথ উদ্যোগে অতি সম্প্রতি সামনে এসেছে এক চাঞ্চল্যকর তথ্য!
তারা দেখিয়েছেন, জল না পাওয়া,একটি তৃষ্ণার্ত চারাগাছ , কিংবা ডালপালা কেটে ফেলা গাছ রীতিমতো চিৎকার করে কাঁদছে !!!

যদিও এই কান্নার শব্দ এমনিতে আমরা শুনতে পাই না,তার কারণ এই তরঙ্গ ultrasonic বা শব্দ-উত্তর তরঙ্গ।এর কম্পাঙ্ক 20100 কিলোহার্টজ।আমাদের শ্রুতি গোচর শব্দের কম্পাঙ্ক সীমা 20 হার্টজ থেকে 20 কিলোহার্টজ।তবে বেশ কিছু প্রাণী যেমন বাদুড় এবং কিছু পতঙ্গ এই শব্দ - উত্তর তরঙ্গ শুনতে পায়।তবে গাছের কান্না এই প্রাণীরা শুনতে পায় কিনা,সেটা নিয়ে বিজ্ঞানীরা এখনো নিশ্চিত নন।কারণ এই শব্দ এতই মৃদু যে,খুব কাছে থেকেই শোনা যেতে পারে ।

বিজ্ঞানীরা গাছের কান্না (ultrasonic) কে বিশেষ যন্ত্র দ্বারা রেকর্ড করেছেন।তারপর বিশেষ উপায়ে গাছের কান্না কে মানুষের শ্রুতিগোচর তরঙ্গে পরিণত করেছেন।

কিন্তু প্রশ্নটা হল,গাছ কাঁদছে কিভাবে? এই কাজটিতে বলা হয়েছে, গাছের জাইলেম( xylem) বাহিকা ই হলো গাছের কান্নার কেন্দ্র।জাইলেম বহিকা কার্যত একটি নল (tube), যার কাজ হলো গাছের শেকড় থেকে কাণ্ডে এবং পাতায় জল এবং পুষ্টি সরবরাহ করা। গাছ কাঁদতে চাইলে এই জাইলেম এর মধ্যে প্রচুর পরিমানে বুদবুদ তৈরী করে বা বুদবুদ ফাটিয়ে দেয়, যার ফলে একটা শব্দ শোনা যায়। এই শব্দই হল গাছের কান্না।
একটি Machine Learning মডেল বানিয়ে গাছ থেকে বেরিয়ে আসা শব্দকে বিশ্লেষণ করে বলে দেয়া যাচ্ছে গাছটা সত্যি যন্ত্রনায় আছে কিনা।দেখা গেছে যে গাছ নিয়মিত জল পায়,সেই গাছ "শান্ত", আর যে গাছ জল পায় না,কিংবা যার গাছের ডাল ভেঙে গেছে,সেই গাছ চিৎকার করে "কাঁদে"। যদিও এই মডেল এখন 70% নির্ভুল।
