World Red Cross Day - Celebrating Strength and Reach
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated annually on May 8th to honor the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant (born 1828), founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate. It highlights the humanitarian work of volunteers, reaffirms commitment to peace, and promotes principles of neutrality and impartiality.
The red cross symbol (a red Greek cross on a white background) is an internationally recognized emblem of neutrality, protection, and humanitarian aid. It is used during armed conflicts and disasters to identify and protect medical personnel, vehicles, and facilities, signaling that they must not be attacked.
