*Are We Raising Learners or Just Exam Takers?*
As a teacher, I often wonder about today’s children and their approach towards learning. Recently, I was teaching the working of a speaker — explaining electromagnetic properties, mechanical vibrations, and sound wave production.
Suddenly, a student interrupted me and said, "Teacher, don't teach this. It’s not going to come in the exam."
I was taken aback. I asked, "Why does it matter if it’s in the exam? Aren't you curious to know how things around you work?"
His response made me think deeply. It feltlike he was more of a *'परीक्षार्थी'* (exam-oriented) rather than a *'विद्यार्थी'* (true learner).
When we were students, we would ask endless questions and eagerly absorb knowledge beyond the syllabus. But today, I notice a shift:
1. Abundance of Free Resources: Knowledge is just a click away, yet the value of learning has diminished.
2. Lack of Value for Free Knowledge: Because resources are easily available, the importance of learning feels reduced.
3.Rote Learning Over Understanding: Many students focus on memorizing facts rather than understanding concepts — which often leads to lower scores.
4. Weak Foundation: Students struggle with current topics because they forget what they learned in previous years, even though the syllabus is designed progressively.
Education is not just about exams — it’s about nurturing curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for learning. I hope we can guide our children to become true learners, not just to pass exams, but to understand the world around them.Let’s encourage them to ask questions, explore concepts, and value knowledge for its own sake.
Because real learning begins beyond the syllabus.
