The kanji 山 was originally read as “shan” in Chinese, and this sound evolved into サン (san) in Japanese — becoming its ON reading.

Examples include:
🗻 富士山 (Fujisan) — Mount Fuji
🌋 火山 (Kazan) — Volcano

For example, mountains were called “yama” long before the kanji 山 existed. When kanji was introduced, it was matched to this existing word — making やま (yama) the KUN reading.
